  1. Take that with a pinch of salt (how exactly does he know the entire history of a coin worth relatively little)
  2. Next time you say you are off for a weekend at the paris hilton we will know what you mean then Peter
  3. The one thing everyone tends to forget is that it only takes two people to fancy a coin on flea bay and a bidding war starts - often with a high grade example its three ,four or five that are having a go . Be realistic if you are on a budget , understand that the coin of YOUR dreams is also the coin of someone elses dreams , accept a lower grade and try and be happy with your lot . Its not your fault you were not born into the royal family or the rothschild or hilton, getty etc
  4. At a quick glance I would say genuine - but there again i am no expert in these
  5. LOVE TOKEN?
  6. Very sad , she never really enjoyed the coins then did she - so much good work ,but I surpose the coins did get passed down so you have a great momento there now too remember her with.
  7. Heres a question for you are the maundy coins before 1970 of pre decimal value and are the coins after that date issued as decimal pence I doubt if anyone whould ever try and spend one really BUT THEY MIGHT! Perhaps a question for the mint itself
  8. you could try a run of any date maundy coin of all the kings and queens from victoria to elizabeth that would be fun and quite cheap - if you are not bothered by grade you could pick up plenty maundy singles it would not take you long - remember maundy odds are very cheap on their own the value is in having a full set in ef- unc grade
  9. yep love the 1864 as well well undergraded more like ef and rare in that grade
  10. Aled jones on TV this morning , five minute slot about the queen and the royal mint in llantrisant, a few old clips and a couple of new ones - might interest someone around about 09.40 am
  11. Funny thing is an ord 1862 penny in VF is not worth slabbing as the slab is worth around as much as the coin - the original owner of the coin was let down BIG TIME by that slabbing company . I dont really know much about slabbing companies in the USA , but I feel I would want nothing to do with them after these daft mistakes they make
  12. To be fair both coins fall in the range of a £5-£8 rummage bin pieces so if you got them for around £3-£4 each you did ok . They are not serious coins but beginers coins but important for getting newcomers interested in coins , I would not doubt they are authentic, few forgeries of contemp pieces exist , more recent ones are common . The penalty for forgery was death , at the time - it put a lot of folks off , clipping was more common.
  13. I dont think anyone would seriously want to fake such poor lookinh coins at all - they both look gen to me . OK they are not scrap - but they are not far off
  14. £22 is a good price - you really would struggle to get a £50 note for it - crown collectors in particular want high grade atractive examples so your piece will always be the bridesmaid never the bride. Those nasty edge knocks have really done the coin in it is nothing but a beginers coin now- sorry
  15. I think you might get £60 a true BU should fetch in the region of £80- £100
  16. Nice rarity , I have never found one , a pity the obverse is such a poor strike , there are a few light marks as well , a nice find most are well under this grade Ef seems to be the usual grade they are found in.
  17. By the way colin cooke had one in worse for sale right now for £150 so you have not done too bad. Your coin is far superior to theirs so I would say its worth around £220 easy
  18. I would beg to differ that halfcrown is an attractive good fine for me , sorry could not grade that plain fine , I dont really see that it GF for me
  19. A pony , a pony, my kingdom for a pony! LOL
  20. I love the way the charles appears larger than the horse remember charles was 5 foot 4 inches tall
  21. Admitedly the abillity to grade coins will always be a one in two thousand probability if you stop the ordinary person in the street , but it will ALWAYS be a rare thing as long as the hobby base is a small as it is today
  22. The only people who need to grade or value coins are people who collect coins . The only people who need to use slabing companies are the uneducated , people who inherit or find a hoard can always look for info off a profesional .
  23. I think we need a statement from the royal mint in my idea would be to ask them if these coins are "money" or not in other words stop marketing these coins as "coins with a face value" if they cannot be spent , that will clear up any missunderstandings. In the future we might have "Queens hundredth birthday medal" with no face value .
  24. Either they are legal tender or they are not . Perhaps someone should ask for info under the freedom of information act , that would teach them
