  1. The coin itself is evasive copy of a trade token . These tokens were heavly circulated in the uk from 1788 onwards - there was a death penalty on copying regal coins coin so it would have been much easyer to fake trade tokens for which there was no death penalty .
  2. I remember Likey coins if I remember rightly they advertised in coin monthly in the seventies . £3 was quite a price tag for the early seventies , there again this coin is in tip top grade looks like EF for issue
  3. yep books are the way forward - everyone needs to know at least the basics straight away
  4. I would actually think that maybe something in you has just switched off the off button . Remember you can go too overboard on doing something in your spare time and your brain might have switched you off (Hey at least its not a harmfull thing like drugs or alcohol though). I would say take a break from the coin hunting , clear your mind for a while , then set a date to open your collection again in the near future , say six months away and see is the feelings return . Dont worry if they dont just repeat the above task , and maybe think of selling up if you are really bored or fed up with collecting. good luck!
  5. I would not pay that for it - It looks like henry VIII at a table on one of his regular food binges getting served up jesus for main course. Its tiny as well Would be better off melted down
  6. there are quite a few with this date - they always get sold to the states on the bay
  7. Remember the people who recieved these proof sets were probably not coin collectors so might not appreciate the need to keep the whole set together. They might even not have understood the value or rarity of the set , if it was a foreign president say he might have considered the coins as uninteresting and not particulally valueable , remember the set would have been presented in the mid fiffties coin collecting was not as popular then
  8. Wow that is the most ugly portrait of George III ever
  9. Most posts are really good advice , but the best advice I can give apart from the wealth of information above is TRY AND ENJOY the hobby - in the end nothing else matters.
  10. lol
  11. if anyone is interested 2016 dated coins have now appeared into circulation i have had three of four 10p coins
  12. Oh come on peter spell his name right you knew him well enough
  13. Found a new brittania £2 in my change the other day
  14. As to half and full sovs I heard off my grandfather that the first world war was the end of them in circulation . but many people kept a few as collectors items , over the years and many drifted back into circulation only to be withdrawn by the banks or kept by their new owners. I think by the mid ninteen twenties they had become prety rare in circulation , but it could have been later

    Silver 2p

When is a silver coin not a silver coin / when its Nickle- plated steel , so why call it silver then ?
  16. is that russian , scott?
  17. So its not just football players that are experts on models , LOL
  18. 50p a year would be excessive!
  19. Looks worth £2 to me LOL, worn and a pile of rubbish , should fetch a fortune on ebay
  20. The coin is EF yes the fact it is poorly struck is obvious to everyone in numismatic circles , I surpose its best not to mention it really, just state the grade with a picture if you come to sell it , there are many other issues with problems as well like early george V pennies a well struck one will fetch a premium and is a bonus to you but an a run of the mill one might not appeal to anyone. Would be nice if you could knock on the royal mints doors and ask them to restrike your coin as you aint happy with it .
  21. I think these coins if it was made public in the press and in the media would easy fetch £250 each , after all they are much much rarer than the mule 20p and ten times rarer than kew gardens 50ps which are actually quite common. All it needs is for someone to leak this news to the daily mail and every chav in the county will be seaching their pockets looking for these coins (with no success, by the way!)
  22. I notice that gum tree is now flooded with folks selling peter rabit 50p coins at between £200 and £20 mostly , they fetch a much more reasonable £1 or so each on ebay , so logic says that they will never sell at these prices or is it just that many people out there have an over optimistic side to their nature. Or maybe they think their is a sucker around every corner.
