  5. We were having this summer/winter conversation the other night…it was my initial view that, if you grew up in Australia, you’d know no different, Christmas would always have been in the middle of summer, which I can’t get my head around at all. The reciprocal view was that the massive movie influence always has Christmas alongside snow and, I guess, Father Christmas comes from Lapland, so is mostly featured in scenes of wintery weather. So, where does that leave the experience of an Australian? Are they as weirded out by the idea of Christmas being a winter celebration, as we are by you all having a bbq in your shorts on the same day? Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas, whichever continent you happen to be having it on 🎄🎄

  9. It could be either, depending on whether they inserted the wrong letter initially, or reinforced just a small section of a blocked letter using a punch big enough to cover the defective area. You also have to consider the ability to sink a correction deep enough on the die if it had been hardened previously and the degree to which it had been softened in order to sink the new punch. The truth is, we don't know the circumstances and can only speculate. There is however, strong circumstantial evidence on occasion to suggest insufficient depth of strike for the correction or change of date. The above may well be a case of this, but equally could be a repair to the upright of the B, as in this instance the use of E, F, I or L would all broadly follow the shape of the B.

  11. Poetically put. Exactly what I wanted to say but I struggled with the correct wording. Hence the short post. Christmas Day off and back to work Boxing Day. Suits me fine. I echo Paddy's sentiments.

  12. Bah humbug! Just give me the prezzies and some beer. At least I can start commenting ‘evenings getting later’ from tomorrow. I try to be the first. And I do like New Year. But I gladly send my Best Wishes to you all. Jerry

  21. I have this 1873 penny in my collection. It has some unusual elements: Raised marks/lines either side of Victoria's neck on the obverse a raised line between the shield and lighthouse on the reverse Does anyone know what may cause these markings? I suspect it is possibly double struck or made from old dies but I am by no means certain. Would appreciate any input or opinions Thanks in advance

  22. This is found on many dates in the 1870s for some reason, caused by a clash of obverse/reverse dies.
