Also - that particular coin has been photographed badly as far as the lighting goes: a top grade 1934 should be a completely different colour; remember, they were mint treated with hypo so shouldn't be all bright and shiny beige.

Thanks for the reminder it was one of the hypo years.

So then there's this.

Immediately after responding the seller raised the price on the coin and also on shipping, lol. Keep your coin, man. I guess I see enough that it's beat up. 1062 monitors, I had to laugh.

Members beware!  Just spotted this and already got multiple watchers...

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/196199224387?mkevt=1&mkpid=0&emsid=e11021.m43.l1120&mkcid=7&ch=osgood&euid=3bb9025c48274b559c9bab40504eb161&bu=43098541495&ut=RU&osub=-1~1&crd=20240120030846&segname=11021

Clearly one of those recent Chinese copies but which has been doctored to appear "circulated".  More worrying still is if you search seller's other items he has several other Victorian copper "pennies", all copies, but all doctored to one degree or another to masquerade as something more genuine.

... and just looked at his completed listings and feedback and numerous similar doctored copies of various dates have sold for good money and buyers have left positive feedback. A fool and his money... a little knowledge... and other suitable aphorisms spring to mind. Caveat emptor!

thank you

for helping him out The issue seemed to be that the Grading company had limited capacity to work out a tooth from a bead .  But once the gospel is set in plastic iti s hard to speak other than their  written word...  the worst one I had was a beautiful 1837 penny which was slabbed in fact a half penny.....  you just can't get the staff....

Merry Christmas all

Great excuse to break it out and let it free , pretty sure a penny is worth much more than a halfpenny anyway

I reported this listing to Ebay today - it's an obvious replica:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/325985059920?hash=item4be6394450:g:EHcAAOSwp91ltkcq&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA0AaRk5xddPBH27qigZUEyIop%2F5aKdToWXukNQwqQ0lLkgbH4OTBEYJHeXHERTqxPpmlcWUb%2F%2FcuOe1KATXNU5H5CNFBMrLHzryB8hUk8QaYAvhSiKKJmdWdlrIXa3ec5ihlO3Te3EquK8ZkkZmpKq4npCftNxc6s01sSHuHKqGBqPgAc5JTy4vVwkAogn0yNRGL6mvklppjN%2Firp0GOnn%2F%2B4KTwzFe3B4KbGSXVm9jghyuzQ5lZYnK4%2Fe9%2F5%2B8L1JigBasGKsM%2B1EZPrrgHh0jg%3D|tkp%3ABk9SR6SBpJWqYw

And here's their reply:

What happened:
We looked into your report and didn’t find the listing to be in violation of our policy. This determination was made using automation or artificial intelligence.

So that's alright then.

Further to my previous post, they are now making replica coins in an "aged" condition and they are appearing on Ebay in increasing numbers. The fake obverses all have 180 border beads/teeth whereas the genuine coins have 175.

The fake/replica coins have quite a deep "scar" in the queen's hair that still shows in worn coins and is not present in genuine coins:

It also just "looks" wrong, on an intuitive level.

Yes, I agree but that 1849 fake just sold for £232 !!!

I know! Gobsmacked is an understatement of how I feel..

I'm furious as I've been messaging the seller telling him that many of his coins are fakes but he's just telling me to stop harassing him. I hope the buyers can tell the difference but I suspect that they're not experts.

Buyers are clearly not recognising them Richard, I reckon this guy has made about £2000 in the last month, loads of co(I)ns. All of the crap he splurts out in some of his descriptions really 'take the biscuit'..... "private collection" etc....... unbelievable!!! 😱

I have done a post on one of the facebook groups ,one of the members is now employed by eBay to help stop this with coin sales.

I know he has a hard time looking at pictures of fakes ,1933 pennies ,coins of all different denominations  etc , but hopefully he will be able to take some action.

I will share your pictures if asked Richard ,hope thats ok.

I have put a post on the coin community forum with a couple of example pictures. It seems to me that some of our American cousins are more likely to be taken in by these.
