silver coinage was made in several provincial towns in the great recoinage - i suspect the dies were made at the tower mint and safely and carefully sent to the towns , york , chester , etc probaby with a couple of senior staff to oversee production.

I think at the time silver production and copper production were in seperate areas of the mint . I surpose everyone wanted to work on the silver and gold coins as they would have more presteige. So the dregs and apprentices got the jobs on the copper

The seller has obviously taken the ignore it and it might go away,(sometimes called the ostrich in the sand)attitude to the coin and the damage . It will however mean the coin will never sell in the end - the only thing that will is reduceing the price

At a guess i would say a £200+ coin - not a series i know much about though

looks a little like the obverse has been lightly cleaned at one time

I found one in not much worse condition (good fine)at the birmingham coin fair in a £5 coin box - I snapped it up it is a lot rarer date than folks realise. The damage on the coins reverse has turned it into a £50 coin and the seller should soon realise this . I could cry looking at the damage

In Dennis heally speak the royal mint is adopting a "screw them till the pips squeek" attitude to coin fans

TBH I would grade as very good fine , its also true you never find decent examples - the reign of steven is even worse

Almost certainly 1723, the 1722 and 1724 dates are a lot rarer

Price is ok if there is a sovereign and half sovereign in there

9/9 has to be wonderful though very clear

Halfpennies are pretty hard with few in much more than washer state , nicer grade coins are few and far between

Virtually no contemporary forgerys exist (Unless anyone knows different) but there are a few modern copies that might be passed off as the real thing . Surely these will just be the key dates - 1869 and 1875 h penny etc

Well your 1945 shilling is only worth melt value at the moment - but it would not halm having a go at cleaning it - the above two ideas are well and good , remember as the coin is only worth scrap it does not matter much if you ruin it. Congrats on starting up the collecting again - you should find it nostalgic and more fun than years ago , also its more expensive as well , but you can't have everything can you?

Cleaning is very light on that one - would only reduce its value by a little

Coins mostly need a quick wipe with just toilet paper soaked with acetone or a cloth , a cloth is better but you also have to wash it because acetone is a smelly solvent that you really don't want to be handleing , ever . This removes all the gunk from coins , you know the stuff that gets transfered from years of being handled in peoples pockets , removes all the grease and dirt and give the underneath a chance to shine through again Soap and water also works as well but just not as fast , several washes might be needed . Remember NEVER rub to hard or the coin might end up with surface scratches

The old favorite acetone may be better , its great on copper and bronze so I see no good reason why brass 3D'S would not be improved
