  1. Dia , weight and composition would assist.
  2. There is nothing wrong with your coins as they are serving their purpose of educating. You can't go wrong for £19 for 2 silver coins over 300 years old. Obviously you can google and find many hammered coins to buy. I have bought from Historic Coinage (Clive), Saltford coins,Gillis,Lloyd Bennet,CC,Vosper and a few others including some US sellers. Auctions should also be on your radar although better pieces are sought after and bargains are difficult.I also often use VCOINS but you need to get in early on new listings.I don't discount ebay on new listings BIN and have sniped a few running their course. Don't forget we have online dealers on the forum who don't pay to appear on the top of google searches. I'm sure other forum members have favourites.Happy hunting.
  3. You would think a grasp of Latin goes with the job....or ought to.
  4. Copper I don't think you are referring to Garrets coin. If he picked up his crown for £22 I'm holidaying in Brisbane....
  5. Shouldn't it be 208 mersey road ? Rob...Are you still in correspondence with Gunga Din????
  6. Hi Welcome to the forum. The coins you have pictured are very low grade.Maybe you could get a bit above melt for some of the 3d's. The silver content is pre 1920 92.5% (sterling) and 1920 to 1946 50%. If you weighed them and put them on ebay in these 2 categories you should shift them.
  7. My hard copy arrived today.
  8. As a verb Vicky. I thought you Yanks used English as your 1st language
  9. The online website is updated after hard copies and pdf's have been gorged.
  10. It was a tongue in cheek suggestion that you post the coins to me...Oh well.
  11. There is always a boaster.
  12. TG asked you to post pictures.I'm asking you to post them to me. Very nice.
  13. You're just down the road from the Midland and it's the fair this Sunday....Just a thought.
  14. Pete I would never have guessed.
  15. TPG's need to up their game. They 1st need to ID the type ignoring grade and then pass on to graders who GRADE not knowing provenance/rarity bias.(as far as possible). Then get the MD's to put their cocks on the block.
  16. Yes Grasshopper you are doing well.
  17. I am happy with conservative or accurate grading as both sit the right side of the fence.
  18. Buying a coin for investment is a risky business.I have both failed and succeeded ,luckily more the latter.I have done well with favorable exchange rates and in depth knowledge of a series.Eye appeal is a big factor,if you like it the chances are others will. Colin of Aboutfarthings will be publishing a book on farthings soon (won't you Colin ? ) This will ignite the 1/4d market and make me a copper/bronze multi millionaire. I only have 1 sovereign at present because I flogged the lot when gold peaked,I could not ignore nearly 400%.I've still got pre sovereign gold (not much) but the coins are not so tied to bullion I also prefer them.Flipping coins is a skill which Declan has mastered. At one time in the Thatcher period I joined a syndicate of fellow Q.S's who gambled their VAT £ or surplus funds on the stockmarket. It became common place to take a 15% profit....lets not talk about losses. I also follow my unit linked pension funds and have gambled with these. Investing for profit in any field IS a gamble. With your own knowledge gathered from various sources you can increase your chances of getting it right. Before Coin news there was a publication called Coin Monthly and I remember they did a Top 10 of coins to invest in...Boy did they get it wrong. Coins I can honestly say I collect for pleasure and financial benefit is a bonus.
  19. Weaver at least your 1915 HC is sterling.
  20. I have just replied to another thread and type collector springs to mind. A 1906 1d looks so much like a 1907 1d do you just want date runs? Will your 1906 not be as nice as your 1908? Could you live with this? There are loads of things to consider. The finest examples of any coin will always be in demand.I started off on the date run scenario but now a 'dyed in the wool' type collector. Modern RM issues will burn your £ on a non return basis. The historic aspect of a coin gives me my buzz.Books, internet, fairs and your own research will be your friend. Welcome to the forum of procrastination, bedwetters and thoroughly decent chaps (and chapettes).
  21. Wow...A post on silver that has grabbed my attention.. My only observation is although they look beautiful we have comments from experienced members (and respected by me).My comments thus Better sets are available. You will only be buying one set. Price ? and ease of upgrading? If you are asking questions maybe you have your doubts? You have bench marked this set...in your court Paul.
  22. Just a glance and reckon F and bullion value.
  23. Sometimes its best to strike and not regret later. 4 new coins to look forward to,you will be dreaming groats tonight.
  24. Listened to the vocal only version the other evening Bowie and Mercury at their zenith.
  25. Both coins would of circulated heavily up to approx the mid 60's when the pre 1920 silver magically disappeared from circulation. 1920-46 hung around until decimalization (gradually decreasing) Take Pete's offer
