  1. I did use a groat when I was young, in the 30's, but only rememberthem as 'fourpnies' Only to go to the pork butchers for 4 penny dips ( bread buns dipped in the pork fat of the roasting tins, with crackling added - AAH! the memory of pre healthy eating! ) The silver threepenny piece was a 'diddler' in the north, but can't recall a name for the fourpence.
  2. You can see it on here http://www.royalmint.com/TheRoyalMint/Shop...x?theme=Royalty But don't try to click on the picture - the link doesn't work here either! Yahoo! Nice to be back, Chris!
  3. The link did not work for me! Am I to be grateful?
  4. Then I hope they pay for the results!
  5. Thanks Chris. That was the man I was thinking of. I see that the spate of sales of his coins has stopped. I believe his work is quite in demand in it's own right?
  6. I am trying to remember the name of the renowned 19th/20th century copiest. I keep coming back to van Arsell, but I can find no reference to him on the usual Google or Ask sites. I know that a lot of his coins were for sale on e-bay last year. Anyone know him?
  7. Just as an update. No real identification. Coin News had a stab at a Mereaux, but I'd already gone down that route. So---my claim to have the only King Arthur stater remains
  8. Some useful facts (pity it's about the old coinage) The Halfpenny is 1" diameter The Sixpence is 3/4" diameter 10 pennies or 12 halfpennies or 15 farthings, placed edge to edge measures 1ft. 3 pennies or 5 halfpennies or 10 farthings weigh 1 oz. 2 halfpennies and 1 farthing weigh 1/2 oz. 1 halfpenny and 1 silver threepence weigh 1/4 oz. George III 1797 penny weighs 1 oz. The two pence weighing 2 oz. Pity the Euros or British decimal coinage is not as useful
  9. I bought a little book today, from a charity shop, that has proved very informative - but has to be taken with a pinch of salt in places! It is a 1970 issue of "Teach yourself Numismatics" by C.C. Chamberlain. One pearl of wisdom I thought I'd pass on:- "Cleaning Coins. Where a copper coin has a fine patina or a silver coin is richly 'toned', they are best left alone. A badly corroded coin, however, can be improved by brushing with sawdust soaked in diluted sulphuric or citric acid. Ammonia will remove green oxide." So now you know!
  10. Nice haul! It's the sort of thing I'd like to find in a junk shop - Ah! well. I can dream can't I?
  11. I find driving in Germany much easier than in Britain, and I can't figure our why Mind you, I do not like the closeness of following cars - terrifying, especially when they approach at 100+
  12. Just spotted this on E-bay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...81218&rd=1&rd=1 It looks like a Berwick type.
  13. Great Coin! There's something about hammered that draws you! I speculate on who has handled it, what did it buy and why is it in such good condition? Was it buries in a hurry in times of peril or was it lost? Modern stuff just can't compete
  14. I'm fed up with the cult of celebrity. I hope they throw away the key!
  15. With being incused, it looks more than likely to be for embossing documents, in a solicitors office, perchance?
  16. must have driven around the wrong loop! Not really. It was still a trip to remember.
  17. Well we're back from our round trip in Germany. Beautiful country. We drove 2000+ miles taking in such places as Bremen, Goslar, Berlin, Schwerin, Oldenburgh and many others - and not a single coin dealer to be found! Perhaps you are becoming the only one in Germany, Chris??? Had a great time despite coming home with my coin money!
  18. I'd say it's Edward IV Light Coinage (1464-70) Spinks 2011, North1582. Classed Normal for rarety by North, rather rarer by Spinks. Quatrifoils by the neck and "N" on the breast identify it. The well worn ledgend makes exact attribution difficult, but I'd say it's probably with the Rose mint mark - but that's a guess
  19. For a country that saddled us with "Teflon" Tony and the dour scot next door, I think it ill behoves anyone north of Hadrians wall (he had some great ideas!) to slag off the Royal Family!
  20. Looks like he's looking for relatives called Won Born Every Minute!
  21. I don't know where you live, but I have found that local museums are very helpful - in my case, putting me in touch with their 'consultant numismatist' who proved really helpful. Worth a try?
  22. I'm not an Elizabeth collector, but I can't say I like the face on the coin and the fact that her crown seems to be well in advance of her head? But then I could be wrong, but I would never chance buying it - even if I had the money
