Well we're back from our round trip in Germany. Beautiful country. We drove 2000+ miles taking in such places as Bremen, Goslar, Berlin, Schwerin, Oldenburgh and many others - and not a single coin dealer to be found! Perhaps you are becoming the only one in Germany, Chris??? Had a great time despite coming home with my coin money!

I'd say it's Edward IV Light Coinage (1464-70) Spinks 2011, North1582. Classed Normal for rarety by North, rather rarer by Spinks. Quatrifoils by the neck and "N" on the breast identify it. The well worn ledgend makes exact attribution difficult, but I'd say it's probably with the Rose mint mark - but that's a guess

For a country that saddled us with "Teflon" Tony and the dour scot next door, I think it ill behoves anyone north of Hadrians wall (he had some great ideas!) to slag off the Royal Family!

I don't know where you live, but I have found that local museums are very helpful - in my case, putting me in touch with their 'consultant numismatist' who proved really helpful. Worth a try?

I'm not an Elizabeth collector, but I can't say I like the face on the coin and the fact that her crown seems to be well in advance of her head? But then I could be wrong, but I would never chance buying it - even if I had the money

Sounds as though you need to see Krause "Collecting World Coins". Pricey, But there are those in the forum that have copies. So, any 'unknowns', post pictures of them here and someone will identify and value them for you.

Hi! Perkin There are plenty of books available and it will be worth your going to the public library and requesting specific titles. Chris's "Collectors Coins" is a good start along with Spinks "Coins of England". Hope you post a few of your pictures of the coins for the mob here to squabble about! I was going to post this in'Ancient', but 1154 can't really be classed as that old! The Tealby penny I have recently bought seems to show the bust as threequarter stance, half way between profile and face-on. I have searched North and Spinks for a classification, without success. Am I seeing something that is not really there? The pellet in the centre of the sceptre and the form of the ear also throws me. Comments please. Where are all the hammered collectors lately? It seems all the activity has been on milled faults/variations.

Thank you for that erudite dissertation! I'm sure it will be of great help to many on the forum. I must admit to 'cleaning' coins in a variety of ways, as well as using the "siver paper wipe" on some of the more obscure coins, but I must emphasise, I am a collector of hammered silver of the Plantagenets and stycas of Northumbria.

As for The middle eastern fracas, while researching my ancestry i came across a photo of my uncle Norman. Nothing unusual in that but he was in uniform and outside a tent - in Afghanistan. Nothing changes! I forgot to add - this was in 1930!

I am puzzled! I've just received a sales booklet from Westminster and find listed hammered, Celtic, Roman and early milled coins for sale. The pictures all show VF and better coins. Now! Just where are all these 'hoards' (for that is what they must be from - or fake!) have come from? To be a commercial venture they must have large stocks of all the examples, but, Boudicca units - Cnut pennies etc. The mind boggles!
