Anyone remember these old dealers?:

Tony Mathews (Foley Island Coins)

Leonard Kaitcher

Alan Rayner

The almost unfortunately named Johnny Condon (in the Caledionian road near Kings Cross)

The great Irish guy who everyone sold their pre 20 and 47 to- (John O'hara?)

Patrick Deane

D. J. Traynor (was he with Tony Brock?)

Nigel Goldman (he finished up inside but then became a succesful author)

I'm sure there's more but thats all I can remember for the moment and also many of them from the 60's and 70's amazingly are still around..

Patrick Deane is still dealing does a lot with modern coins now but he does still do old coins, he was at the last London show.

David trayner is still about too, comes to the odd Wakefield or Harrogate show though he can be more commonly seen in the pubs of Manchester ;-)

As a boy, I recall visiting Mr Brady (can't remember his first name, but it wasn't Ian!) at his well-stocked shop in Brady's Arcade, Kingston upon Thames. I recall that he was once attacked (hit over the head) and had a lot of stock stolen. An online search shows him as a British Numismatic Society member in 1965. Anyone else remember him or come across his coins?

None of you has mentioned those great stalwarts of 60s and 70s Coin Monthly - R&L Coins of Blackpool. They took out multi-page ads as I remember, selling mostly lower grade key date and date-run items, modern stuff, new issues, and accessories. I bought a few nice things from them in 1979 when I worked in Blackpool (BU 1929 penny, and early strike 1933 halfcrown UNC, among others). Peter Ireland too, who was also based there.

The Leonard Kaitcher you mention - was he the same guy that ran the KAITCER COINS ad in Coin Monthly? Quite high priced but top quality stock if I remember right.

Yes we spelt his name wrong.. L A KAITCER The Ulster Coin Centre, unless it was his family

who kept the business going, as I see they were advertising 1978. Lenny was certainly

blown up by an IRA Bomb. I never dealt with him, but he always had large adverts in the

Coin Mags.

I see CHARD Coins Blackpool incorporated R & L Coins , dont know if its the same person from the early days

I just Googled this from their site:

"Lawrence Chard

Lawrence Chard started dealing in coins, including gold sovereigns in 1964.

The original business was located in Dale Street, Blackpool.

In 1969 we bought and moved to our current premises.

R. & L. Coins

Originally we were known as R. & L. Coins, and we still retain that sign on our facia.

Chard (1964) Limited

In 1992, we changed our name to Chard (1964) Limited, partly because the Chard name was well known and well regarded, particularly by many Blackpool "old-timers", and partly because in addition to our original business dealing in coins, we have a gold bullion, gold jewellery, and diamond ring section of our business."

So L was Leonard though it doesn't say who R was.

And this:

"Company Details

Trading Names

Chard

Chard Tax Free Gold

Chard Coins

Chard Gold

R&L Coins

Company Name

Chard (1964) Limited

Address

521 Lytham Road

Blackpool

Lancashire

FY4 1RJ"

They now seem to deal only in gold sovereigns.

We used to call it the "Las Vegas Food Giant" because of the sign. I guess I've been gone from the that neighborhood for a long time because I remember when the Beeliner Diner opened and I don't remember it closing.

Peter Ireland only died a couple of years ago I think he was in his late sixties - a mear youngster compared to many dealers

Wonder if anybody remembers Ken King who used to have a stall down Portobello Road in the late 60s/early 70s. Always seemed to have a big stock but I've yet to come across anyone who remembers him. One of the more approachable dealers of his era.

I don't, but what a stupendously resonant - almost comic book - name! Mild, bespectacled Ken King, ignored by fellow-numismatist Joan Allen, gets changed in a phone box and becomes... SuperDealer!!

I remember dealing with Malcolm Ellis in the 60s, and he's still going I believe.

Very much so! I have bought a few things from him over the past few years.

Posted

Here's his website, although curiously it makes reference to the prices he will pay for coins by reign and grade, but apparently doesn't list any for sale, apart from gold.

He seems to specialise in bullion nowadays with his price list for the likes of "silver hammered pennies" seemingly only applying to the most common issues.
