secret santa Posted January 31, 2024 Posted January 31, 2024 I reported this listing to Ebay today - it's an obvious replica: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/325985059920?hash=item4be6394450:g:EHcAAOSwp91ltkcq&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA0AaRk5xddPBH27qigZUEyIop%2F5aKdToWXukNQwqQ0lLkgbH4OTBEYJHeXHERTqxPpmlcWUb%2F%2FcuOe1KATXNU5H5CNFBMrLHzryB8hUk8QaYAvhSiKKJmdWdlrIXa3ec5ihlO3Te3EquK8ZkkZmpKq4npCftNxc6s01sSHuHKqGBqPgAc5JTy4vVwkAogn0yNRGL6mvklppjN%2Firp0GOnn%2F%2B4KTwzFe3B4KbGSXVm9jghyuzQ5lZYnK4%2Fe9%2F5%2B8L1JigBasGKsM%2B1EZPrrgHh0jg%3D|tkp%3ABk9SR6SBpJWqYw And here's their reply: What happened: We looked into your report and didn’t find the listing to be in violation of our policy. secret santa Posted February 2, 2024 Posted February 2, 2024 Further to my previous post, they are now making replica coins in an "aged" condition and they are appearing on Ebay in increasing numbers. The fake obverses all have 180 border beads/teeth whereas the genuine coins have 175. 1 Quote

secret santa Posted February 2, 2024 Posted February 2, 2024 The fake/replica coins have quite a deep "scar" in the queen's hair that still shows in worn coins and is not present in genuine coins: 3 Quote
secret santa Posted February 2, 2024 Posted February 2, 2024 (edited) It's carried over from the "uncirculated" ones. And absent on a genuine coin Edited February 2, 2024 by secret santa addition Quote

secret santa Posted February 3, 2024 Posted February 3, 2024 I'm furious as I've been messaging the seller telling him that many of his coins are fakes but he's just telling me to stop harassing him. I hope the buyers can tell the difference but I suspect that they're not experts. Quote
alfnail Posted February 3, 2024 Posted February 3, 2024 Buyers are clearly not recognising them Richard, I reckon this guy has made about £2000 in the last month, loads of co(I)ns. All of the crap he splurts out in some of his descriptions really 'take the biscuit'..... "private collection" etc....... unbelievable!!! 😱 Quote
PWA 1967 Posted February 4, 2024 Posted February 4, 2024 (edited) I have done a post on one of the facebook groups ,one of the members is now employed by eBay to help stop this with coin sales. I know he has a hard time looking at pictures of fakes ,1933 pennies ,coins of all different denominations etc , but hopefully he will be able to take some action. I will share your pictures if asked Richard ,hope thats ok. Edited February 4, 2024 by PWA 1967 1 Quote
secret santa Posted February 4, 2024 Posted February 4, 2024 Please do, Pete. We need to stop this. I'm going to put a new page on my varieties website to illustrate these fakes. 5 Quote
Paddy Posted February 4, 2024 Posted February 4, 2024 I have put a post on the coin community forum with a couple of example pictures. It seems to me that some of our American cousins are more likely to be taken in by these. Quote

jelida Posted February 15, 2024 Posted February 15, 2024 Not necessarily a worst offering, just mis-described by NGC and the vendor has followed suit. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/126326106682?itmmeta=01HPP1PAKM29E6B28M1EVHGG5E&hash=item1d699f6a3a:g:NV4AAOSw2tZlxS33&itmprp=enc%3AAQAIAAAAsLKd0l82XvnuaGrzJO%2FHcJBV3x52qzjv7EFUyGtuDfrY3BiF%2BgCLs%2F0oAPx%2Fn0SCC3RYgwRYFrRUDPMG%2FjfGZzu2ShMHdF58OPVYNlD%2BPndD4YGTqM7lC1YVglfmlKPDqzbdsYoAG6L1bd3CV68Ofczf280EJOyzDBDpNBXB5YeOESC2tfazyh2oR4M4VNnnR8bnBs8D5P1Ga873l60L2fb0i9cBE9XtVSCS1gVpihmJ|tkp%3ABk9SR_6p2cG1Yw I have messaged him might be worth others doing so too. The date digits are not quite in the correct font. True for all of these copies (probably to do with how the dies have been CAD generated, I guess, as these are not pressure casts from genuine coins, thus the discrepancies with border beads and bust details). Worth adding that info to your page, Richard?? Quote

Makes the blurb with the listing pretty redundant. I wonder what the real numbers are? Bet there are errors both ways with a few mules thrown in to cover bases. Full sharp UNC details and fully Satiny Lustrous. Very scarce "Beaded Border" variety and of the only 26 known by the major grading services only 1 graded higher!!! Paddy Posted February 15, 2024 Posted February 15, 2024 I messaged him too and have just had a reply acknowledging the error and saying he was cancelling the listing. I see it has now been ended - fair does. 1 Quote

He did say it didn’t look like a beaded to him either; perhaps a little more research would have been in order, but his response is fair and honest; I dare say we all make mistakes. 😮 Jerry 1 Quote
