  1. Agreed, the reverse is quite nice, though looks more suited to a colonial issue. The obverse is all wrong. Far too busy in the border and again in the clothing/veil. The portrait, too small and not at all sculptural, much like something rendered from a photograph which, indeed, I think it was. The overall effect is that of a token or commemorative medalet. Kudos to Jaggy though, a nice one to own.
  2. If with a die number below the date, or a slender 3 in the date, or with a 3 over 1 in the date, then, yes, quite possibly. A bog standard 1863, even in uncirculated condition, wouldn't be worth a tenth of that figure.
  3. Great minds Pete, great minds. Another bit of info for newbie Chris. Total 1971 'new pence' 2p minted: 1,454,856,250 (almost one and a half billion). Total 1979 'new pence' 2p minted: 260,200,000 (more than 260 million).
  4. Nothing to get excited about, unfortunately. Each is worth face value only (i.e 2p). They were all inscribed 'New Pence' until 1982 from when 'New' was replaced with the quantity of pence (one, two, five etc.)
  5. The snake is quite successfully rendered, but the two men look as though they've been sourced from a primary school art project.
  6. Love those. My dad was from Scotland Rd.
  7. Hear, hear Pete. Finest people in/from the world. Long may it be so. Sorry to hear you've been unwell. I hope you're on the mend.
  8. I concur. If the aEF grade was an attempt to mislead the coin wouldn't be offered at £1.50 with free P&P.
  9. And when a farthing may have meant the difference between eating or not eating, if you were unlucky enough to have been slipped one, you probably went hungry that day!
  10. Not at all. Counterfeit, but contemporary counterfeit. A nice souvenir of the everyday lives of ordinary people in the 1770s. Worth a few quid, but so what? The value is in it's age and the part counterfeiting played in the social history of the period.
  11. Here's an official 1674 farthing I have which also displays excess metal. Britannia appears to be sporting a backpack, Charlie has a ponytail.
  12. Much better photos. A contemporary counterfeit. Obverse off centre. Lots of excess metal on the planchet or chunks missing from the die giving the appearance of design anomalies.
  13. Rob is right, no beard, simply a 'mushy' effect in the metal and subsequent wear creating the appearance of one. The placement of letters spelling Britannia is wrong for a Regal issue coin.
  14. Indeed Paddy, it's not even worth the P&P being charged. But then, maybe we're not taking into account the lifetime guarantee of authenticity. You can't put a price on peace of mind.
  15. Above it on the same page I see this being offered. An absolute bargain and 'Authenticity Guaranteed for Life' too . What more could you want? https://www.ebay.com/itm/1931-UK-Great-Britain-Farthing-1-4-penny-PCGS-MS65-RD-FULL-RED-2746/202307415641?_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIM.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D50544%26meid%3D49d9f899342b451a81dfea5882ae64ad%26pid%3D100623%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D5%26sd%3D222974628946%26itm%3D202307415641&_trksid=p2047675.c100623.m-1
  16. "All that glitters is not gold ... but it is very attractive toning. " Glisters, dear boy, glisters……
  17. And farthings, but my field is early milled. I'm afraid bun ID leaves me baffled as they all look the same to me!
  18. I've been viewing some of the terracotta, clay, etc. antiquities. The thing which struck me is, no matter what the period or geographical region of origin, they all seem to have the exact same 'aged' look about them.
  19. I noticed this one from Stu too. The seller hadn't even bothered to remove it from the manufacture's packaging. Prize twerp.
  20. Yeah. I've spent the last two days turning over the ground, composting, levelling, and reseeding, in the back garden. In my mind I'm a snake-hipped, eye-linered, rock god. In reality, I'm hobbling about like an extra from Planet of the Apes muttering: '"Ooh me poor back, ooh me poor back'…..
  21. No! No! No! Terrible! The Wombles would've been better. (laughs) That was a novelty record released to cash in on the last gasp.
