  1. 2 genuine F148 1897 High tides in very similar grades finished today on Ebay This one was unsold at £59.99, whilst another went for just £6.05 after 5 bids, interesting that this very scarce variety invokes such little interest
  2. I was watching this one, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/162079854220?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT went for £205
  3. Not as pronounced as on other dates discussed previously, but here's a 1931 penny with missing waves Can we now stop calling "missing waves" as true varieties and recognise them as simple die fills in area of the design most likely to act as a pinch point for any excess gease to collect.
  4. Torrential hail here at the moment
  5. I don't think we can put this down to recycled shell casings. Just very poor quality control of blanks - there are lamination flaws congruent with the brassy streaks on this 1936 penny
  6. The Portuguese coppers for Maria II are similar but slightly different Mainland portugal X reis coins are 31mm and weigh 12.75g and were minted in all years 1840-1847 and 1850-1853 though the 1853 was issued solely for Mozambique Madeira X reis coins are 33mm and weigh 12.8g and were minted 1842, 1850 & 1852 - the 1850 is very rare. Also a XX reis 36mm. 25.5g for 1843 Azores 10 Reis coins are 30mm and weigh 6.4g - minted in 1842-3 and a 20 reis 35mm, 14.5g for 1843
  7. quick survey from my jar of circulated bun pennies 1894 - 4 long R straight E 1893 - 7 long R straight E 1892 - 11 long R straight E 1891 - 18 long R straight E 2 short R straight E 1890 - 11 long R straight E
  8. Thanks everyone for birthday good wishes "Oh to be in England now that April's there" conjures thoughts of Spring, the last two days we've had gales, sleet, hale, interspersed with sunshine. Most places in the world have a climate, we have weather. David
  9. Just checked mine, Aa - gap, Ca - touch, will look in my reserve collection junk box to see if I have any other 1889s to check David
  10. Got here by the Forum tag on the main Predecimal site - "all activity" & "unread Content" are giving error messages
  11. Always amazed at the quality of strike on ancient Greek stuff, keep meaning to buy a cheap one as an example, but lack of knowledge makes me wary of buying a fake
  12. Not a date spacing, but rather a die fill and/or die wear. an 166 penny Upping the contrast shows a very faint 8 No great value but fun to spot and add to the collection, and no less significant than a filled arm of an E in my view
  13. Is there a link, can't see one on the Colin Cooke site?
  14. Though the attempt may well be made, the recipients are always elderly. My late Mum was sadly demented when she received the Royal Maundy, we didn't even know she had been selected till after the event, she had no recollection of it, we found the coins and documents much later when she went into care, scattered around the house. Although she may not to our knowledge have attempted to spend her Maundy coins, she did attempt to pay a bill with old £1 premium bond certificates
  15. It was well worth the gamble, given the premium for 1860 ONFs, which I suspect all are from a filled die, rather than surface corrosion like this poor 1861 If you don't look, you wont find the cherries. I've found 1863 open 3, 1903 open 3, gouby X 1911 (x3), 1875 obverse dot, etc, over the years all for average circulated prices. I've also bought a load of crap from Ebay pictures which looked promising
  16. There's one not listed by Gouby, wide date 1895, still looking for a BP1901Aa
  17. £2.46 plus 99p postage, there's this month's budget blown!
  18. Here's the set my Mum got from HRH in 2004, full sets of each denomination, plus 2 extra 4ps
  19. This looked interesting on the Ebay picture an ONF on an 1861 penny, the bottom leg of the E is there on examination, wonder if a better one exists somewhere
  20. Thanks, here's both sides Bought a few years ago, vendor listed it as a 1915 without noting the variety. Sadly scans of shiny coins never come out as they look in hand. the notched tooth is not as pronounced as of the 1916, so possibly die damage that progressed. There are references to recessed ears without the damaged tooth, but can't ever remember seeing a picture of one. This exercise has reminded me to upgrade my standard 1915 sometime
  21. If you hold the coin to view from the edge, the recessed ear variety shows a distinct concavity rather than the normal convex bust. here are my pennies - top 1915 normal and recessed, 1916 below normal and recessed. The "Recess" is best seen in the area behind the ear lobe. Far easier to spot in photos of worn toned examples
  22. Thanks for that Gary, best article on threepences I've seen, may even think about getting some, they seem relatively cheap
  23. It came today, poor thing has had a tough life - surface corrosion, most of which has been helpfully removed with Brasso Definiely a Freeman 1, Gouby 1860 D, so fills a gap. Not bad for £8.73 plus £10 postage, the rest of the lot (mostly Brassoed) went straight into the bin except for this one A very worn example of the 1909 Ndot - so two gaps filled I'm a happy bunny paying far less than my actual bid David
  24. Just bought a job lot of vickie bronze, gambling this is an F1 - Link. Looks like raised lines on shield, but been fooled by eBay pictures before
