    Hard to tell, but my money is on a forward rather than downward gaze. The two prominent die breaks on the reverse may be diagnostic for those in the know.

    I am no expert at all values, but it seems to me that there is no consistency for the period 1860-1970 as to which coin designs (farthing to half crown, obverse or reverse) have designer’s initials. So maybe there is no rule?

    My attitude is that Britannia here is a heraldic device - designed for national pride rather than artistic critique, The bronze coins were produced for the masses. When folk are tired of playing with a broom handle, they could try to persuade their cat to sit upright like the lion on a George VI Scottish shilling

    By analogy, does anyone under 50 collect stamps any more? People nowadays communicate by phone, email or social media, rather than by mail.

    If you cannot go into a local shop and buy your shopping with it, it is not a coin in my opinion.

    As we move to a cashless society, there may be an increasing lack of nostalgia for coins and banknotes. So my prediction is for credit and debit cards, let’s face it, most get a hammering and 99% are religiously destroyed when they reach their expiry date. An unused 1966 Barclaycard may be the future holy grail for collectors

    I’ve always thought that there are possibly several minor varieties for 1911/2 pennies, but only the Gouby X has a good marker with bead alignment. There are reports that folk in the 60’s reported variations in flan diameters, there are also normal and raised obverse rims. Whether the differences are die related, or due to flan diameter and/or striking pressure is an open question.

    What method do you use? I only have one slabbed coin, didn’t notice was slabbed when I bought it off eBay. Very nervous I might damage a high quality scarce coin from a bumbled effort.

    1811-1815 have no VI in legend and all have oval shield, variations to legend exist - it’s a general rather than a specialised catalogue. D.Joao Principe Regente 1799-1816 = prince regent D.Joao VI O Clemente 1816-1826 = king

    It looks OK to me, just checked my Portuguese catalogue. 1819 has round shield as do all 1820 - 1825, but 1821 and 1823 both exist with oval shield. Wouldn’t worry too much about position of lettering, these are all pretty crude strikes, and footnote to this type states “existe legenda junta e seperada” 36mm 38.4g bronze 2013 values for 1819 are F €20 VF €100 EF €250

    I’ve been looking for a decent F175 for years, my example is about GF pulled from circulation many moons ago, far scarcer than the books suggest. 1908 F164 is also very difficult in decent grade in my experience.

    Looks S.Asian to me, but there are lots of temple tokens as well as true coins. Best place to get an answer is probably Zeno

    VG is a standard source book for French coins Monnaies francaises - Colonies 1670-1942, Metropole 1771-1942, VG (Victor Guilloteau) Versailles 1942. My copy is a reprint, prices are in Vichy French francs. your pieces match VG 2454, but no mention of uniface pieces like yours the adopted design was by Tiolier

    You say “tiny” what is the diameter, if small these look like a tentative essai for a 5 francs in gold, all the 1815 essais for 5 francs silver submitted by Michaud and others are betwwen 37 and 38mm according to VG no essais for a 5 franc in gold are listed for Louis xviii, these first minted for Napoleon iii in 1855 I would definitely contact CGB, I’ve found them very helpful in the past

    I haven’t got Courts article to hand at present, but from memory I think we are talking millions for the 1916 RE, must be more than one working die, very puzzling.
