I think the Crown Dependencies, - Jersey, Guernsey, IOM, Gibraltar, St Helena & Ascension, and the Falkland Islands nominally each have their own currencies, not the Pound Sterling but in practice parity with it. Cayman Islands uses the US dollar I think

This variety has recut waves in addition to the difference in date width, Does anyone know of any other significant penny date width variations post EVII?

Looking at my 1904's I have two distinct date widths David Groom lists 5 variations, including open and closed 9's and one with the 4 tilted David

Sad to see that Chet Krause has died, see http://secure.numismaster.com/ta/numis/Article.jsp?ad=article&ArticleId=28265 I bought an early version of his World Coins back in 1979, a tremendous leap forward compared to the books I had relied on in the local reference libraries when I was a kid - (we didn't have Google back then) The Krause guides are still my first step when trying to identify an unknown foreign type, though I always take pricing with a pinch of salt

By it's very nature, this thread of mistrikes and flaws usually features low grade examples, so thought this composite of two nice 1929 obverses, missing waves and normal, should go here though maybe this variety is better described as missing rocks

Agreed, I'll give it an acetone bath,and will rescan it with another similar grade one with identical illumination.

Everything else looks normal to me, a bog standard circulated 1931. I'm 90% convinced that missing waves are a result of grease fill rather than die alteration/wear/other damage and may possibly occur in all dates 1927-36. The 1934 will probably stay at a premium as it featured in a high profile sale and is to be included in the new Freeman. I'm waiting on delivery of a high grade 1929 which looks interesting. As for the 3, I have no answer at present, I don't think it's an optical illusion due to the surrounded verdegris, but... I'm hoping forum members will take the time to look in their caches of GV pennies to see if anything similar turns up

I posted this 1931 penny the other day in the die clogs thread as a "missing waves" variety, Just noted the date looked odd comparison of dates with a normal 1931 That upper loop of the 3 looks decidedly larger to me, comments welcome

I won't bother then. I don't mind using a microscope to confirm or illustrate a variety, but if I need one to find it the first place, then I loose interest.

Very true, always difficult to compare coins photographed under different lighting conditions, don't like the thumb print on the second one though
