You would have to be a complete fool to not know the size of a coin that you were buying for £50000+ , but it might have happened at some time, who knows?
I have just realised that i was looking at a different auction for patterns. But if you go to search 'Pattern shilling 1887' and look at the Christies.com result, it is there. Also the link above it 'The Mitchell-David Collection' is the one with all the gold patterns that i mentioned. Sorry, i am no good at easy links.
Very nice find Blake. I sometimes trawl the ebay pennies, but i feel like i am going crosseyed after a couple of hours. And i have never found a convincing rare penny going cheap. Well done for completing your set.
Hi Paddy. There is no reference to a different die or dot on the 1856 florins in ESC. And i have never heard or seen anything about this, as i would have made a note. I will check my 1856 florin when i get home, just to see.
Alternatively, if they do keep to just commision bids, there could be a lot of bargains for the buyers. But not good for the sellers. I think that jaggy might have hit the nail on the head.
