PWA 1967 Posted October 8, 2016 Posted October 8, 2016 Sorry if this is a daft question.......probably Looking at Pennies 1961-67. Why is the 1961 harder to find and more expensive ?. I know we are not talking hundreds but still a big difference in dealers selling other years for £1 and the 1961 for £5. Maybe as mentioned a daft question but ........? Quote

Why is the 1961 harder to find and more expensive ?. I know we are not talking hundreds but still a big difference in dealers selling other years for £1 and the 1961 for £5. Maybe as mentioned a daft question but ........? Two principal reasons:- 1/ Mintages 1961 - 48,313,400 1962 - 148,308,600 1963 - 125,235,600 1964 - 153, 294,000 1965 - 121,310,400 1966 - 165,739,200 1967 - 654,564,000 2/ I bought some old coin monthly mags from the late 1960's and early 1970's, off Rob a couple or so years back, and the late 60's was very much a boom time for the coin market. It was obvious from looking at some of the dealer ads, that dealers had bought many mint rolls of mainly later into the 60's pennies, such as 1967, and were offering them for sale to the public. I reckon a combination of the two points above is pretty much why 1962 to 1967, is cheaper than the 1961. There are fewer 1961 pennies available in BU, than the other years, especially 1967 itself. PWA 1967 Posted October 8, 2016 Posted October 8, 2016 Thanks Mike. I had assumed it must of been to do with the mintage numbers. So i need to look for a mint roll of 1961 as £5 each seamed steep Quote

My 2014 coin yearbook (admittedly 2 years out of date), has an UNC 1961 at £2, 1962 to 1966 at £0.50, and the 1967 with a dash through it. Can't think that much would have changed for that particular cohort in the time elapsed since then. Quote
Rob Posted October 8, 2016 Posted October 8, 2016 If I have any in stock they usually go in at £3, reducing for the others 1 Quote

Peter Posted October 9, 2016 Posted October 9, 2016 1961 are rare because all the boys born in that year had large Penis's and could put many of them under their foreskins.....that is why I collect farthings ...61 boy here. Quote
VickySilver Posted October 9, 2016 Posted October 9, 2016 Bit much information there, I should say. Don't recall coins being collected in that manner previously.... Quote

It was a gas meter used in the 1960's, I believe. Took shillings, which you inserted and then turned a lever clockwise to drop the coin into the machine itself. Might explain some of the edge knocks on shillings. Quote

We didn’t have gas at our home in the 60s but I recall we had APM SMITH’s electricity meters, which took a florin Edited October 10, 2016 by jacinbox 1 Quote

jelida Posted October 12, 2016 Posted October 12, 2016 Not a lot for me recently, but pleased with the 1913 F175 from the Midland, and a £10 penny from Ebay that arrived today, rather worn and with a lamination flaw to the base of the bust, but I think a BP1860V with the narrow colon. Jerry 4 Quote

The more i think about it ....i dont have a clue how you spot them. Your brain must be sharp to notice all these at a show..........The 1913 at a show there must be loads, and need to check them which takes time unless your only after one or two coins.....i.e That particular one F175 would only take a glance..........but only if you want one Is it your only looking for a couple now . I would think i knew indicators for coins i was missing but you must spend hours trying to find something a dealer wasnt bothered about / missed at a show . Jerry whats the secret or do you walk round with a book or notes list of indicators ?. Quote
