  1. I have no hope of contacting them at the moment. The CGS number goes unanswered and the London coins number gets answered by Semra and you're told we're not CGS and get hung up on.... emails are hit an miss sometimes the reply is within minutes others there is no reply. I will have to wait and see what happens but contractually they cannot take the higher fee as its not what I signed up for.
  2. Seems to be fine here and no changes to the fee's mentioned above that I can see
  3. They can't charge anymore than I signed up for on the submission form as far as I am aware. I am guessing they will either return my coins or charge me under the pricing model on the submission for I signed.
  4. So I have decided to send a few coins to CGS in part because I had to send two slabs in anyway for reslabbing so I decided to sanity check my grading against a TPG. @azda asked me to post what I was sending in so you could give your own grades and I was discussing the whole process with @Paulus yesterday. I had these down as: Coin Obv Rev 1817 HC GVF GVF 1911 HC EF gEF 1912 HC aEF EF 1913 HC aEF aEF 1916 HC gEF gEF 1918 HC EF EF 1919 HC gEF gEF

    CGS Again

Well seven Half crowns will be going to the post office in about an hour along with two pennys to be reslabbed so I imagine I will see some results back in a couple of months I think most will be graded between 50 and 70 based on their grading guide if they are not rejected. I will post the UIN's once I get them.

    CGS Again

I am still new to all this compared a most of you but I totally agree with azda. I started to focus on George V half crowns as they were relatively cheap 8 months ago (is it just me or do the prices for decent George V half crowns seem to have gone a bit mad on ebay/at the coin fairs of late?) and not knowing how much the quality can vary so much year to year. I still find it hard to judge if my grading is accurate or not. It seems the ear on a 1914 HC, which would be gvf on other dates, is EF on a 14 etc. I have actually decided to take the plunge and send some of my half crowns to CGS to see what grades I get back versus what I think they are.
  8. I asked the seller about this pretty much stating sold at LCA, March, £100 etc etc. The feedback I had was: No sorry think you have made a mistake I brought this on eBay not less then 3 weeks ago for nearly 500 on bids if you have the info for this coin please share as I will be contact eBay bout this matter as I've had another dealer tell me a coin I had was another from another aution which i also won on eBay many thanks again shelly So it appears they may have been had in the first place.....
  9. A couple a upgrades this week although I am still struggling with 1914 Halfcrowns.
  10. My only shilling for the period being discussed:
  11. These four are probably my best first world war year's half crowns but it seems to be the case that if the obverse strike is good the reverse strike is weak. I am still looking for upgrades.
  12. Thanks Jerry, I just want to know if they are any good or not as an option for storage going forward
  13. I am trying to complete a date run of George V Halfcrowns, missing the two hard ones to get at the moment in a 25 and 30 but I have other dates I want to upgrade like my 1914
  14. Hi Jerry, did they turn up? If so were they any good?
  15. Thanks for the reply John, what time span does 'this period' refer to? Just 1914? 1911 through to 1919? I ask as the ear on my 1919 is pretty well struck up and the 15, and 16's are not as bad as the 14 above.
  16. I have been looking to upgrade my 1914 Halfcrown for a while but every example I find has wear on the upper ear/its not fully formed. Looking at the CGS population report even the top graded 1914 Halfcrown they have on record (CGS 82 UIN 37819) has this issue. Is this a common thing with how 1914's were minted or are there examples of this date with the ear fully formed and in near perfect condition?
  17. 3 x 1916 and 2 x 1918. I am constantly looking at upgrades and as I am still relatively new to this I am finding it extremely helpful to have them in my collection to compare. What I would have considered EF 8 months ago has most certainly dropped to at least aEF based on the comparisons between what I own. I will eventually move them 'spares' on but for now I like having them in my collection, especially if I snag a bargin or two along the way
  18. A few newbies, Half pennies and Half Crowns. I am never sure whether to post here or coin acquisition of the week. These are upgrade for me but I imagine are nothing compared to a lot of those in people collections. Should I stop posting on this thread?
  19. No problem Jerry, I am happy to try and help and I hope they are what you are after
  20. Jerry I did a quick google and found these. Are these the type of thing you are after? Marketing bumf: No rim coin capsules has 0,3mm extra in inner diameter which allows to fit same diameter of coin to coin capsule. In this case, for example, 27mm diameter coin will be perfect coin capsule 27mm. http://store.pellers.eu/coin-capsules/capsules-without-rim
  21. For half crowns the 32mm Quadrums are spot on. The 16mm for threepence are a bit tight and fiddly but once they are in they are fine.
  22. No contest really but it just shows the difference between the two given that MS64 is covered by CGS 78 to 82.
  23. I picked up a couple of 1957 Halfcrowns recently, one off Pete and the other off ebay but they offer a good comparison on grading from CGS and NGC: CGS 82 NGC MS 64:
  24. Oh Rob to add to my post above, I make sure all other lights are off.... no room lights, no TV, nothing. I found with the room lights on I would sometimes get more or an orange tone or would find reflections of my clothes, for example a red T-Shirt, would impact the colour of the coins e.g. a red tinge would appear on the coin from the T-shirt being reflected.
