I will happily pay 5p for the coppers if you will pay postage. Do you take PayPal? I would pay 95p for the pound as there is a bit missing, same terms as above. If you try Ebay do be aware they take 10%. My offer could be to your advantage, unless of course you would rather spend them . Jerry

I am perfectly happy to see these, correctly advertised as replicas, on the bay because it should alert the idiots to the existence of these copies. I can then feel much less sorry for those tw*ts that do pay big money for similar from fraudsters. It is a small price to pay for personal peace of mind.? Jerry

Reported too.

They are not particularly rare and the price of lustrous examples seems to have settled at around £400 judging by recent auctions. No doubt a lot are freshly recognised. The one currently on EBay looks to be a nice and clear example, as much as one can be sure from the pics. There are undoubtedly a number of different overstruck dies. Gouby does cover this in detail. Some sellers seem to be referring back to Spink catalogues of 5-6 years ago, when the published prices were much higher. Spink do seem to be moving with the times on this one. Jerry

I am so sorry to hear this, life must feel so empty. Stay strong, don't be afraid to lean on family and friends, they will do likewise, this is how things should be at a time of great loss. I hope better times will come in time. Best wishes from Jerry and Libby

Penny Acquisition of the week

Beautiful, would have been a good price even for a standard F10! Jerry -
Yes, but as a single coin and assuming less than uncirculated condition, scrap metal value only. If you had a large quantity, you might be able to get the Bank of England to redeem them at face value, but hardly worth the effort of a special trip. Jerry
-
These Nuremberg Jetton are actually quite common metal detecting finds in the U.K., but you were nonetheless lucky to spot it. It might improve with a gentle scrub with a soft brush in cold water. Jerry

Almost everything about it is subtly wrong, find some good on-line images of a genuine article and compare. As with your previous experiences, the key is knowing your field, but what really stands out glaringly to me is the engraving of the bodice, just so stylized and WRONG. It does also help to know that you can buy other dates struck from the same dies in China on Alibaba.com, and a lot of 1869 are appearing on Ebay , usually complete with a bunch of lies regarding provenance. Jerry

And here is another date of fake Victorian penny. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VICTORIA-PENNY-1875-H-/122581741896?hash=item1c8a70f148:g:WxcAAOSwcj5ZW8c9 Jerry

I have great difficulty buying from Rendel because of his pricing structure.....? Jerry -
I find it difficult to reach any conclusion from the photographs but I would point out that any digits present would have been stamped on the coin, not the die, or they would be in relief i.e. raised on the coin. It would be technically challenging to prepare a set of dies that struck an incuse image if the intention was a one-off or limited production run. The overwhelming likelihood therefore is that these digits, if any, are post mint interventions, and of little numismatic interest. Jerry

Hi Richard, a scan of this would be very welcome in Deepest Herefordshire too! Jerry

omega_02 Just been looking through his items for sale too, what a load of tat! But his 'Roman ring" is a typical piece of modern tourist repro and his "Neolithic tool" is a beach pebble. Not a trustworthy seller. Jerry
-
Was it the coin from omega02? He states that he is selling it for a friend who found it metal detecting, ALL LIES I suspect. Reclaim your money through PayPal if he doesn't cough up, and report him to eBay. Through Paypal you should get any postage too. Jerry

Certainly a WRL fake with the logo deliberately partially obscured. Get your money back, or report the fraud to the police, this sort of thing is becoming all too commonplace. Jerry

Pete, many thanks for the super coins that arrived today, one being an unexpected freebie, you are a real gentleman! Jerry

In fact very few high grade examples have thus been recognised, see Richards 'rarest pennies' site. But I agree not that unusual in this grade, usually one or two on the market somewhere.

Great news, congratulations! My first grandchild is now 4 weeks old, and she's a beaut. I know how you feel! Jerry

True, I have had some cracking buys like the 1897 HT with good lustre for a tenner! I tend to put in a tentative bid to get it to the top of the list, then snipe a realistic bid late, though it will be less than Declan has for his on EBay at present for this coin. With a real rarity that I really want, I may bid high at the start, to discourage some one else becoming 'high bidder' and starting off EBay negotiations. The 1875 cannonball that I won last month for 99p also had a late snipe well into three figures, but clearly no one else spotted it. One thing is for sure, posting every rarity here prior to sale may help the seller but would remove any chance of a bargain. Bernie, as some here know, if I really want a coin I have no issues with paying dealer prices, and more. But a bargain is always nice. Post them after the auction has ended, and they are safely in the mail, for the reasons already discussed on this forum. Jerry
-
Yes, and I had already put the first bid on it the day it was posted. Talk about a spoiler! Jerry

This is the same 'coin' and seller as discussed last week, he is clearly a scum-bag and a fraudster with no scruples . Well done for standing up to him. Jerry

Looks to me like it's been in a corrosive environment. A lot of detector found cupro nickel looks like this, even quite recent losses. The durability of modern coinage isn't a patch on the old. Jerry
