  1. I don’t have the definitive answer re the Briot coinage, not my field, but they look like file marks and how adjustment marks usually look. Perhaps Rob’s expertise is called for again here? Jerry
  2. Beautiful ! The scratches I presume are adjustment marks, contemporary with manufacture and therefore perfectly acceptable. Well done! Jerry
  3. We really need pictures to give a practical comment.
  4. Not sure it’s the worst offering, but I certainly don’t want to try it! https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Victoria-Bum-Head-One-Penny/182981956692?hash=item2a9a931454:g:NGkAAOSwrxdaQW0c Jerry
  5. My pennies from Richard have arrived safely, I am very pleased to have filled a couple of gaps that I thought un-fillable, and lovely coins to boot. Many thanks. Jerry
  6. WTF? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/one-penny-1898/222762363666?hash=item33ddabeb12:g:3ygAAOSwEkhZvY1C Jerry
  7. You don’t often see either for sale, and unless properly described it is a bit ‘pot luck’. My lustrous F175 was a bargain just under £100 from a dealer at the MCF, but my similar F176 was nearer £300 at LCA. They are both very rare in UNCish grades. I would have thought £50 would not be unreasonable for a nice VF, but that is just my thought rather than evidence based. Jerry
  8. Cascades? Yes, distinctly unfortunate under the circumstances though appears to be a widely used reference in the Seattle area. But I would have thought the Amtrak Cascades homepage could have had some emergency modification, particularly the prominent section about how safe their trains are. And Trump, bless him, used the incident to push ‘his’ infrastructure plans, with his thoughts for the victims a somewhat belatedly tweeted afterthought. On advice from a real human, I suppose. Jerry
  9. At least half of his many wares are modern fantasy pieces and fakes, all claimed as ancient, and he has massive positive feedback. He has the same supplier as Saxby I suspect. I have little sympathy for the idiots who buy this tat, but really he belongs behind bars. Jerry
  10. The hand mark was associated with the Antwerp makers, quite often seen on coin weights, I have one that I found and researched 30 years ago. Jerry
  11. I’m sure it’s just a typo, decimal point in the wrong place ?. Jerry
  12. I s’pose we should be grateful for small mercies ?.
  13. Don’t fall for it! Has he a case against NGC? https://www.ebay.com/itm/1897-Great-Britain-Penny-Ultra-Rare-High-Sea-Level-KM-790-NGC-MS-62-BN/122859101797?hash=item1c9af91e65:g:oYwAAOSwke9aMYf9 Jerry
  14. Do have the hack gold checked through the PAS/treasure procedure. A mate and I found some a couple of years ago, still going through the process but analysis has shown a 99% probability that it is of Bronze Age date, much earlier than we had thought. Jerry
  15. Yes, I too love a dark patina where the surfaces are good and have that lustrous sheen. I don’t know if they still used hypo as late as 1950, can’t say I’ve confidently seen it post 1946. Jerry
  16. A good example of how easy it is to demonstrate non-existent differences by using low resolution photographs, lighting differences and coins of varying degrees of wear across the coins. I am sure that in the hand, or if photographed identically, the dies would be shown to be identical. As for possible ‘missing waves’, maybe but can’t tell from the photo. It is of course possible that this feature occurs on all dates wher the ‘greasing’ of new dies prior to use use took place, I find it hard to consider this a true variety, more akin to a mint error in that the die was not properly de-greased before use. True, I was going by the fact he mentions all the rest of the legend on the coin but not that it stated a denomination. That may simply be an omission. Jerry
  18. And I hope nobody is fooled by this one. The description is taken directly from an LCA lot earlier this year (that coin is in my collection). https://www.ebay.com/itm/One-Penny-1862-Rare-Victoria-United-Kingdom-Small-Date-from-Halfpeny-die-Freeman/122843096930?hash=item1c9a04e762:g:4DIAAOSw7z1aIpCI Jerry
  19. FFS, there are some idiots on EBay, and we see this sort of thing time and time again! https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/rare-minting-mistake-error-1971-new-penny-one-pence-in-1971/182944146337?hash=item2a985223a1:g:iqwAAOSwyP5aJG4i How do they ever work out how to switch their computers on? Jerry

Perhaps a crown, if the legend is as given.? Pics would be nice.

As British coins were current in Australia at that time, it may well be a pocket loss from the early part of the last century. A nice piece of history quite possibly handled by a previous owner of your farm, and well spotted! Jerry
  22. I would say quite rare in decent condition, this is only the second I’ve seen on EBay. LCA has sold several, one of which is in my collection. It would be a single die coin, I would anticipate a Freeman rarity in the mid teens. I think the price reached was a little high given the edge knock and light cleaning, but not extortionate. Jerry
  23. Excellent Pete, that is very good news, I hope you are soon up to full fitness. My poor old Dad (89) has to have a colostomy next week, so yours truly will be spending some time in Aberaeron looking after my memory impaired Mum (86). It’s going to be a stressful time, but hopefully I’ll still make the MCF on 10th for a break! Jerry
  24. You would not have won it if somebody else had placed a bid for £500 or more prior to yours. That seems the most likely to me, but others may know of other possibilities. Jerry
  25. Probably ‘British coin related discussion and enquiries’ or ‘Beginners area’. They will get noticed elsewhere, though , and hopefully someone more knowledgeable than me will comment. Jerry
