  1. If you aren't happy just return it under DSR.
  2. N888eds, Dave (Azda) poked me as promised, which wasn't as painful as it sounds! I don't know what your expectations are but if you are looking at recouping what was paid to Keith Bayford you may well be out of luck. Myself, or any other dealer, would have to buy at a price where we can make a profit otherwise we become charitable organisations rather than dealers. If you are thinking of using Corbitts I can't counsel against it. You will get an offer way below what you want but they have premises to run etc. You can give me a call if you wish or contact via email and I'll try to help as best I can, but please make it during normal working hours. John.
  3. I expect a quite small market, but it is (as far as I can tell) the only book on reading and understanding specifically Arabic coins. It's a book originally published in 1973, then revised in 1980, by Richard Plant and it's been in and out of print a couple of times since then. It was originally also translated into Russian! I want to provide affordable assistance to inquisitive people both now and for future generations, so hope to keep it in print in one shape or another for eternity, even if I won't be able to retire from it! For a few quid it can become part of your field or experience. There is the Michael Broome one Chris.
  4. I fear their salaries will be too high for more than one footballer and 4 cricketers to compete though Rob.
  5. Keep us posted with your fishing,footie,malt,cigars...I believe we would have two tents. Too skint to fish, watch footie, drink or smoke Peter, so I have to rely on the only pleasure in life that is free........moaning about the state of the England cricket and football teams
  6. As well as can be expected, I suppose. You? Fit and well thanks Peck.
  7. Thanks Peck. Yes, it's a good and clear example. Purchased last week and for sale this week I hope you're keeping well?
  8. It is a very difficult one to put a value on. The provenance adds to the price but ultimately it isn't a genuine coin. The 2 markets are the civil war or forgery collectors, with the possible inclusion of halfcrown collectors (although I would want a genuine piece rather than a forgery in my box). The Adams price is probably near the mark at todays level due to the fact that named collections always sell at a premium over anonymous pieces. Question is; How much do you want it?
  9. It would be cheaper to have bought half of the DNW sale than get divorced and you can trust me on that one old bean! For future decision making on this, a quick Excel copy/paste reveals it would have cost over £800,000 for half the 2 day sale (including juice) DNW don't want your testicles or the rest of your life in payment though Paul
  10. It would be cheaper to have bought half of the DNW sale than get divorced and you can trust me on that one old bean!
  11. Chris Webb would take it back without any hesitation (he may query how you know the silver content but once explained he'll be fine). Give them a call and it should get sorted out today Gary.
  12. Raised dots in the field is the easiest tell and the weights are usually slightly under as well. The CGS images are not great but there looks to be one after DEI and another to the lower right on the I of BRITT
  13. The only real clue lies in the 1935 specimen crown issue I suppose. The proof quota having been reached the Royal Mint boxed "specimen strike" crown s to satisfy the demand. Taking that to it's logical conclusion coupled with the fact that all of the wreath crowns had strange mintage figures it is reasonable to assume that they were struck to order?
  14. There are dozens of post 1860 that are worth that money and more (if Scott allows the 1860 1d varieties in of course or the 1860 1/2 mule). Well, worth being taken as the price it would cost you to buy them of course!
  15. Which branch of Poundlands would that be and when? Not a sight you would want to see Dave It mus be Lobel or some such numpty to even consider that purchase price, with the Royal Mint as under or over-bidder, choice uncirculated farthing cased with certificate for £125 each anybody????? I'm just off to do back, sack and crack then!
  16. Based on my own experiences with US major auction houses I would suggest not Bob
  17. 1st Test in the Ashes has been on Richard And what a finish that was... Booking in coins and listening to TMS on a sunny Sunday. Does it get any better? I had sky sports on the computer soooo, needless to say, little work was done last week It all starts again on Thursday........
  18. 1st Test in the Ashes has been on Richard
  19. Shit Dave, I'd be very very very careful digging any signals in Germany. Most things in the ground there come with RAF, USAF or Red Army health warnings around Munchen don't they?
  20. At £14k-18k estimate you'd need your bumps felt to go anywhere near it. Regardless of "catalogue or book price" a sensible estimate would have been £500-£700 and then let the 2 bidders slug it out. I'll bare my arse in woolworths poundlands window if that lot gets away at anywhere near that estimate.
  21. Well & truly and I'm very grateful for all your input. Shows how a novice can be fleeced I suppose. But that's why I asked.... John Argentum asks why would I want it? Because it's what I like/collect/am interested in - why else? As you say - each to his own. Anything wrong with that? I don't collect proof or pattern Soho types or Moore patterns or even Victorian pennies so why should I look for one just because you think I should? I can't be happier with something that doesn't float my boat. I just saw this (so called) 1963 proof and as it's relevant to what interests me and what I collect, I thought I'd enquire about it. And also why I asked my peers - because I wanted to know if I was doing the right thing or not and as it turns out, (obviously) not. So mission accomplished for me. Anyway, an FYI for all, this is the dealer concerned. http://stores.ebay.co.uk/THE-BAY-PEDDLER/3-British-Coins-/_i.html?_fsub=12784226&_sid=214798585&_trksid=p4634.c0.m322 Well that's me fairly and squarely put in my place! I don't think you should collect anything, I merely tried to offer some alternatives (none of which I stock, so no ulterior motive) in the same price and rarity range to somebody who is new to the hobby. Apologies if you feel it was an attempt to pressure/bully/cajole you into doing something that you do not have any interest in.
  22. Did your man provide any provenance or did he find it in a GB bulk lot on ebay? I am still certain that it is just a well struck currency piece and 100% agree with Peck. Why would you want it even if it was a proof? For rarity go and buy a nice proof or pattern Soho type. At around £1300 you would get something almost as rare and a hundred times nicer to look at! If you like Pennies you could pick up a nice Moore pattern at half of that price or less, a Victorian proof at around the same money or a George V proof for a third of that. Do your homework and a bit of legwork and you'll be much happier with the end result. As regards to your mans claims I can say beyond doubt that he is not the largest GB dealer in the world. Had to edit just to add; After 65 years in the trade you would think he would have learnt how to handle proof coins correctly :D :D :D
  23. All I can say about the coin is that it is a well struck example. The pictures make the rim width look unequal (could be the camera of course) which should ring alarm bells. The rims also look rounded and not particularly sharp. If it is actually a proof it certainly would not be one that I would want in my collection, but, each to his own I suppose.
  24. Obviously I do not have the coin in hand, but it looks like a bog standard semi-toned currency issue to me. Is the dealer a reputable dealer or an ebay instant expert? Personally I would be asking for money to take it off somebody elses hands.
