  1. Apologies to those members who contacted requesting a list of unsold lots from the LCA June sale. I decided that if I had to re-write the list I may as well write a catalogue, so that's what I have done. All of the unsolds have been individually catalogued and photographed for sale by auction. As some of you know I work freelance for Northern salerooms and I have submitted the lots for sale at PFK in Penrith. The coins will be sold during and antique sale and run to about 220 lots. The sale date is 09/08/17 and live bidding is available online via the saleroom.com or easyliveauction.com. There will be obv and rev pics for each coin and a printed catalogue will be available from the saleroom on request. In addition to the coins I also have 3 Peter Nichols cabinets available. They are a Coronet (his largest which retails at £954 + £55 delivery) and 2 x Standard Crozier (retailing at £678 + £31 delivery). These are not listed for sale yet so please PM if interested.
  2. Women, you can't live with them and you can't live with them......
  3. Your pictures aren't the best! If it is old (difficult to tell from pictures) and brass the most likely ID will come from researching Spanish or French coin weights.
  4. I agree with Rob. Still a useful book though!
  5. Aye, I could recount a tale or two about him.....
  6. Just been told that Hiram Brown (Edinburgh coin shop) passed quite suddenly last Friday. He was one of the major Penny collectors in the country and an expert on the subject, A bad year for the hobby keeps getting worse.
  7. London Coins returned the unsolds to me today so they are now available for purchase direct from me. PM me or email john.stephenson815@sky.com
  8. I have been in touch with Semra at LC today and the unsolds are being returned to me next week (there are many). If anybody wants any of them drop me an email. The low estimates were my reserve prices and this is the least I will sell for. Email john.stephenson815@sky.com Cheers, John.
  9. Sadly that is not a very reliable guide to anything unless you take an average of multiple salerooms and the same coin/grade during the same 6 month period. I have seen some prices inflated way beyond the value of the coin due to inexperienced or uneducated buyers and other coins slip through at ridiculously low prices for reasons beyond me.
  10. True Scott, difference being though that Boris isn't a terrorist supporting racist who changed his views with his hairstyle.
  11. I hope you'll all join me in wishing the Carol Vorderman of Labour a speedy recovery from her case of "toomuchofaliabilityititis" Nice to see she'll be stepping aside from Home Office though (probably to take up the Chancellors position)........and we thought that the USA had it tough having to choose between Trump and Clinton!
  12. The 1/2d around VF, farthings 1887 and 1901 probably nudging EF, the 1878 GVF and the 1929 6d A UNC judging by the reverse.
  13. No Dave it's just plain old sarcasm.
  14. A gift from God mate, you can't teach it as you've either got it or you get it.
  15. Peter sarcasm is a gift not a curse.....
  16. Getting back to normality (kind of) thanks mate. The weather is shite here too but at least it saves me having to water the crops.... Enjoy the wetplay concert in the cold!
  17. Thanks Dave, your commission cheque is in the post ;-)
  18. I'm a full time dealer and now rely almost solely on ebay for trade. My life circumstances and location mean that fairs are a non-starter. I used to run a website that was slowly dying a death and it was a little perplexing that I could sell a coin at twice my web prices on an ebay buy it now? Trade is definitely slowing on ebay and that is probably due to the thousands and thousands of worthless bits of crap that people list every day. I know several dealers that also rely very heavily on ebay for income although they also attend fairs where the trade is mainly dealer to dealer on the whole. As a dealer the pitfalls are numerous on ebay and we are regularly hit by fraudulent claims of non-receipt etc. The ebay/paypal listing and selling fees are fairly high and once you throw HMRC costs into the mix it's a tough game to be in at times. The good old web has certainly changed the way business is conducted.
  19. Well done Jerry. I was a little disappointed with the prices (on those lots that actually managed to sell), but pleased that they're going to a collector that will appreciate them as much as the old man did.
  20. Blair is the slimiest piece of detritus to float away from Westminster in living memory. I'd rather have syphilis back than him......
  21. Denga money Scott, I used to get that.....
  22. Rob the £12 P&P was PLUS VAT (£14.40 total). Special Delivery was not mentioned and I assume that the 2 coins would have been sent recorded. Storage charges applied to bulky items I can well understand as it is a pain working in a saleroom when the back-end is full of paid for but uncleared furniture etc. 2 coins though? 2 days after an online auction ends? I have used dozens of different auction houses via the saleroom and this shower at Warrington are by far the worst I have encountered, It's almost like they want a crap reputation....
  23. Thanks mate. I can't see the Boro causing your lads too much stress. I thought Liverpool were nailed on for a trophy this season but their mid season loss of form left me a little perplexed.
  24. Below is a copy of an email that I received today in relation to an online only auction that ended on Sunday. I was the "lucky" winner of 2 decent looking Victorian coins of Jamaica. My winning bid was a paltry £10. I was emailed an invoice on Monday and payment was taken later that day from my card details held on the saleroom.com. The total taken was £13.96, 36% commission plus 36p for bidding via the saleroom! Todays email: Good afternoon, We have an invoice for you relating to our sale on 10 May 2017. RE: LOT 1198 – Victorian Jamaican Half Penny I have attempted to call you today to no avail as it would appear that we have an incorrect contact number for you on our records. We are able to provide P&P on this lot to your address which would be charged at £12 plus VAT. Unfortunately the items have attracted storage charges as outlined in our T&Cs and on the emailed invoice. This currently equates to £20.00 . If the account is settled by close of business Monday I would be happy to reduce the storage charges by half. If I do not hear from you by close of business on Monday 22 May 2017 we will have no option other than to enter the items into the next available sale to recover the storage charges. Best regards, Warrington Auction 551 Europa Boulevard Gemini Business Park Westbrook Warrington WA5 7TP T:01925 658833 I phoned them immediately upon receipt and was told that their terms and conditions are clearly outlined on both the saleroom and the email that I was sent on Monday. If I wasn't knee deep in trying to sort out Dads estate I probably would have sorted postage on Tuesday (YES EVEN AT £14.40 for 2 small coins), but c'est la vie. I spoke with the office manager, some fella called Chris, and he was quite implicit regarding their terms. I told him he was probably sailing close to the wind legally but he repeated that their terms are stated on both the saleroom and their email to me. I'd like to see them justify £5/day storage for a halfpenny and a Farthing in a County Court but life is too short and my immediate circumstances mean life is too precious. The final result is that I have instructed them to put the coins back into their next auction and give the proceeds to the Air Ambulance. Their will be no charges to me other than the 15% commission plus VAT (wonders why he was charged 36% VAT inclusive commission to buy), which will be deducted from the sale price. Most auction houses charge no commission when selling on behalf of charities, then again Warrington certainly aren't most auction houses. They have the unique distinction of being the worst and most money grabbing firm I have yet to encounter! Please feel free to share far and wide (no risk of libel as I have stated fact only) and remember that if you deal with Warrington Auctions you do so at your peril....
