Thanks Rob, I've been a wee bit busy mate... Aye, 1 bidder against the reserve will do it. It hurt me more than you can imagine to sell the collection but needs must and I couldn't think of a better way to honour the old mans memory. The printed catalogue is a bit of a let down as LCA haven't listed the collections in the same sections (hammered halfcrowns are unattributed). I'll have to cough to shedding a few tears when I saw it in print this morning though. I have a house full of auction catalogues to empty now (he kept everything).

The old man bought it Rob. He passed on 28/03 and the Halfcrown and Penny collections are offered in this sale. I was offered £4500 for the 1667/4 about 6-9 months after the sale but Dad decided to keep hold of it. I set the estimate on it and based it on the massive increase in prices on the 1726 Halfcrowns which are (as you know) considerably commoner. This is the 1st 1667/4 offered since the Adams sale and if it doesn't meet the reserve I am more than happy to put it back in my piggy bank ;-)

I don't see much wrong with it other than the rim nicks. If it has been in the family for a confirmed 50+ years I would be more than happy to say it was genuine (provided the weight could be confirmed to 2 decimal places and it "rings" as silver). MOST fakes are relatively modern and the earlier ones tend to be poorer quality copies (1905 is a fairly common older type fake and is usually a decent quality).

Double Florins and brass Threepences are relatively easy to complete in GVF to UNC grades if you like complete runs (other than the patterns of course, oh and the 1937 eddy VIII).

That is quite a subjective question, as already stated by Rob. Lower grade 1905 halfcrowns and shillings seem to be down in price in the salerooms from 2 or 3 years ago. Does that make them a good longterm investment or have they settled at a more realistic price? If your question is more of an investment type conundrum the old advice is the best, buy quality or rarity but preferably combine both!

The only tell is the surfaces Dave. Maundy coins are usually prooflike in appearance, although to be fair the early currency strikes can be as well.

I would definitely be interested in the Queens' necklace. Is there any provenance with it? Has it been worn during any official engagements? Can it be tied to any official portraits or photographs?

CGS "varieties" are mainly just CGS trying to bump prices methinks! A different die pairing, error, corrected error etc are all true varieties but die fill in my opinion is not a variety.

As it is a Spink book I doubt the pictures will be up to much! Their latest auction catalogue is an absolute disgrace with coins incorrectly described, incorrectly identified and lotted up as if a 2 year old with a bag of crayons was responsible!

I have just completed a survey on ebay and 89.93% of coins grade as "UNC L@@K VERY RARE" with the remainder being anything from accurately graded to forgeries......I was tempted to examine the 89.93% to try and discern what UNC actually is but the first worn VERY RARE 1967 Penny stopped the project just as it was about to get off the ground!

I emailed him back Peter and after some backwards and forwards emails I managed to get a good discounted rate on electrickery supply....

Assuming of course that the bidders have the first clue about what they were bidding on! If you sit in enough salerooms you'll see plenty of jaw droppers and they all just confirm one thing, "a fool and his/her money...."

I expect a quite small market, but it is (as far as I can tell) the only book on reading and understanding specifically Arabic coins. It's a book originally published in 1973, then revised in 1980, by Richard Plant and it's been in and out of print a couple of times since then. It was originally also translated into Russian! I want to provide affordable assistance to inquisitive people both now and for future generations, so hope to keep it in print in one shape or another for eternity, even if I won't be able to retire from it!
