  1. I agree. Putting grades on Ebay leads to lots of issues - If you grade accurately then you risk no one looking at your items as they are lost in the swill of over-graded rubbish. If you join the over-grading cult you lose credibility with the knowledgeable buyers, or enter into disputes with them. It's a no win!

  2. Yes, ideally he would. But I think some dealers, especially on e bay, prefer not to grade, lest they get panned by those who disagree. We've all seen it on here, and some of it assumes deliberate over grading by the dealer. I can understand why he might want to avoid that. This is what he says:- The ball is therefore wholly in the buyer's court.

  3. Thanks all for the replies. Those pictures are the dealers and not mine. I've just bought it, so it should be here tomorrow. Mine for £440 which I think is reasonable. Vickysilver your idea is certainly interesting but I think I'd want to practice on something a little less valuable first. I might buy a washer or two off ebay later!

  5. That's fair enough. He does provide very good photos which are of course much more useful than grades. I know I am probably losing out, but I just don't buy from Ebay. I am more comfortable buying from dealers' own sites.

  6. I agree with @Paddy ebay is it's own worst enemy with free listings, allowing any nobody to over-grade everything without financial impact. Joining that set is self destruction for any credible dealer or collector.

  7. That doesn't bother me, I don't think it's worth giving a grade on ebay - you just open yourself up to disputes.

  8. Same here - the grease from hands can cause damage. On a worn coin it's not an issue, but on a superb UNC specimen like the one shown, it's sacrilege IMO. Should hold the edges, preferably wearing a cotton glove in case the coin slips into the hand.

  9. The one time I used commission bidding with London Coins all but one of my highest bids won. I've adopted a different approach ever since. Happy to post the auction house name as I still have my email with bids and invoice which would confirm!

  10. Most pleasing picture of a Robin I've seen for years. We used to have a very tame ( probably German migrating) pair that used to fly round the house looking for us to tell us the mealworms bowl was empty.

  12. The sparrows were nest building this morning as were the resident blackbirds. A mouse was noted pilfering the seed we put out for the birds six weeks ago. One hedgehog has reappeared, though I suspect mum and dad didn't make it as one was found rotted away in next door's garden when the lawn was cut and the other appeared on a neighbour's patio a month or more ago having been shredded by a strimmer(?). Last year we had 6 in total.
