Reviewing an old collection

Hi,

I have just rediscovered a collection my father and I put together back in the sixties, and in trying to get to get to grips with what I have, I found this excellent site. So let me say hello.

I am in the process of working out just what I have. Much of it is only fit for scrap, but I have found a few nice items. That said, it is a very widely spread collection with bit of everything and needs thinning down. There are just so many items, it is all a bit daunting.

Maybe someone could give me some advice on the current state of the market and whether it is a good time to be selling? Also, is eBay a good place to move things on?

Not a bad time to sell ebay is the best place for anything under £20.

You sound like you might want to follow on with collecting - just take a long hard look at the coins you have been left and think "do I really like/enjoy those coins" if you come away saying yes to yourself you might have caught the bug..

The late sixties was a boom time for coins with impending decimalization so unless your father was very lucky there will not be a fortune in the collection in fact a few coins might be only worth double/treble what he paid for them , I hope he did not just collect 1950 and 1951 pennies and later crowns etc..

Don't be scared to let go the ones you don't want, remember if someone else wants them the will be looked after and appreciated.

thanks for the reply. Yes there are quite a few 1950 pennies, 1952 sixpence, 1946 and 1949 threepenny bits etc. But it does go a bit further than rare dates from his change, though he was a shopkeeper and he would obviously see a lot of cash and would keep hold of anything he saw of value. Weighing-in the pre 47 silver was a big part of his later years and I am pleased to see that prices for that have improved a lot. But he did deal a little bit, and it looks like he kept back a few interesting things amongst it all.

His box of half crowns looks interesting and there seem to be some nice examples of shillings, but there are hammered coins too. The crowns go back to William III, though there are more later ones. It is such a mix and so much is probably of low value, it will take me a while sort it all out. A job for the winter nights. My plan is to thin it down to something more focussed I can appreciate.

If your box includes a William III crown plus some later crowns plus some hammered, then you will have some value there depending on condtion. For advice you'd be advised to list those early coins and dates, where you can, with perhaps a few pics to give the experts on here something to judge value on.

Photograph any coin that has little wear or is old or interesting. We will tell pretty quickly of any rarities ..

First a 1991H Penny:

An 1817 shilling

A very poor 1905 half crown which I believe is quite rare.

An 1849 half crown:

An 1839 shilling

The 1882H Penny is nice. The 1905 halfcrown is rare but in poor state but i reckon if it was on ebay you might be looking at £100 for that, maybe more as its ebay

Aha, I was under the impression that your father bought most of his coins - now you inform us that he found most of his coins in circulation. , quite a lot will be bog standard stuff then .

You most expensive or valuable coin will be the 1905 halfcrown.

Might I suggest silver from Victoria to George VI as a collecting platform , you could miss out the sixpences and threepence's as they are difficult to find in nice grade the early ones

Like i said get rid slowly , don't try and rush
