Just finished watching it. Fabulous prices but some real bargains on some rarities, e.g. F112, F90, 1863 slender 3, F27 and F76.

Patterns and proofs through the roof.

There was persistent brinkmanship on the bidding and the auctioneer missed bids on 3 lots when she took her eye off the screen and brought the hammer down microseconds after a new bid had flashed up.

Bernie may well be in for a huge CGT bill !!!

The majority of lots went to a single bidder - I'd love to know who that was.

I agree Richard. Hopefully the five pennies that you mention go to penny collectors on this forum!  Overall I am very pleased with the total. Shame the 1954 didn't sell like Del Boys Watch!

Total prices with commission - over £420K !

Wow! Did you win anything Richard?

I won the 1862 8/6 as an upgrade, MS62 for a bit over 2k I thought very reasonable (and I know what you paid for yours Richard, jammy ***). Also the MS 63 F9 mule at a bit over  4K total, again an upgrade and one of the ones where the auctioneer missed the flurry of bids that came in after mine online,  but decided that my bid was the winner  as she had set a precedent with earlier lots. If it stands, a decent coin with fewer marks than the MS64 and £1500 less than the comparable Cope example.

Although prices were high overall, some of the ‘commoner’ rarities were undervalued, the ones you mentioned and I think the F103 and F69 and F28.

Just been to the mailbox for today’s mail, and found a lovely Sovereign Rarities catalogue dedicated solely to Bernie’s Collection, this is a keeper and will have a value of its own one day!  To be fair it may have arrived before the auction, possibly yesterday as leaving the log fire in this weather isn’t tempting in the foothills of the Black Mountains.
Snowy, Brrrrrrrr!

American perhaps? and the same person probably got a lot at the first Geoffrey Cope auction. You get the feeling whoever it is has an unlimited budget and likes their big ticket copper and bronze proofs and patterns. A bad combination for the rest of us!

I would have bought them all too Richard, if I had a spare half million. 🤑

It almost felt like it's a different hobby today, watching top predators at the kill. Afraid I will have to continue scratching around looking for bargains elsewhere... ...which can of course still be fun though.

Congrats to Bernie, but clearly not the end of his collecting as I see he's seeking a swap on his one unsold coin, the F32! 🤔

Does anyone know if there is any way that I can get a copy of the catalog along with the prices realized?

Can it be ordered from Sovereign Rarities?

Thanks,

Gary

Send Steve Hill an eMail at Sovereign Rarities Gary, they might have a couple left, not sure about the prices realised as they are on the website.

I put all the hammer prices into a spreadsheet as I was watching the auction Gary. Let me know if you want me to send a copy..... was just lot number and hammer £ in spreadsheet, as I didn't want to mark my catalogue with prices.

I did exactly the same but with description and commission added as well - nice to see us nerds are alive and well !

It appears that Bernie had got his coins slabbed for the sale and interesting to compare the gradings against previous provenance, e.g. the 1863 die 2 was described as VF in the Laurie Bamford sale but had been graded as AU details-cleaned for Bernie's sale. And the F76 was EF in Laurie's sale but had improved to Unc in Bernie's sale !

As they say, grading is in the eye of the beholder.

I've sent both.

Could I request you forward this to me, too, please? Thanks in advance.

As I said yesterday, I got called into work, so completely missed the whole thing, sadly.

I realize insiders know, but wonder if indeed as has been stated that one collector vacuumed up the majority or a large number of the "better" pieces....I can not compete in these leagues [anymore] but at one time knew a bit more. An older and now non-entity nowadays! LOL.

That would be great appreciated.

If you can include the PDF downloads of the catalog I would appreciate it too.  I was only able to download the first part. I got an error message on parts 2 & 3.

Thanks all.

Are there three parts?
