DNW and spink auctions prices always make me thankful for good old ebay

Ah, but DNW & Spink filter out the odd 10000 Churchill et al crowns that plague ebay and you also know that in the main the worst you will find in the auctions is not too far removed from the best you see on ebay. If eBay listings reduced by 90% to where they were 10 years ago, it would be a much more pleasurable experience.

Yes, saw that.

I have bought three lots. One - the one I really wanted - well over the high estimate but the two others at £20 and £40 below the low estimate.

So not too bad really.

Not too surprised to be honest. Half crowns aren't particularly my thing, so I don't have a handle on prices to really comment, but this one (#2113) is nice full and round and reasonably struck. An attractive example.

#2115 I was following. (P) shillings are generally particularly poorly struck, so finding one that has most of the legends with a clear mint mark (albeit just on one side) is tricky. Not a great strike, but I suspect there's very little wear, so a better-than-average example. £450 is that after the additions? Mmmm .. last year's example (DNW 107 Mar 13 Lot #311) went higher than expected. Maybe someone (not me!) lost out then and didn't want to miss the boat this time around?

I agree with you, Rob, re the design of the commonwealth coins, don't understand their popularity at all, though they've always priced up well for good examples, as far as I can remember at least!

There was a fabulous Mary groat on eBay about 6 months ago, which I sniped at around £800 (if I remember correctly) and still lost it!

It certainly tries one's self-discipline if you tune in to the auction with no budget and no intention to spend any money! I just about managed to abstain (this time!) ... what did you win Garrett?

Its perhaps not the design that people are buying them for, but instead the history of why those coins were struck in the 1st place.The sixpence did really well, if i'm correct, one had an estimate of £500-£600 and opened at £1400

I was lucky, i was looking at the same two coins as Garrett and missed out. Its funny, because when i've missed out i find myself scrambling around the catalogue again when i should just leave it be (which i managed to do this time)

I won a nice George IV crown (lot 2607) for 380 against an estimate of 400-450.

But my big OMG moment was winning lot 2568 for 750 against an estimate of 900-1200 (I think 750 is probably reasonable enough though).

It is a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful George II crown and will be the oldest crown I have, as well as by far the most expensive coin.

After the last DNW sale (my first) where just about everything I watched soared over the high estimate I didn't even bother stay up to watch this one, These were naughty pre-bids. I only found out when I woke up this morning.

It's a nice surprise, but I wasn't even planning to bid after Nobles last week. Will mean I be will sitting around Christmas holidays having a few beers watching the cricket instead of heading to the Gold Coast for a few days ha ha ha.

Well done to anyone who got anything nice !!

Good work on your purchases and nice to see at least someone has some discipline so as to not get sucked into online "mega(crazy)bidding" where prices go ballistic and the bidders feed off of each other. I had to pass after some previous bidding indiscretions and needing a bit of time to recoup. I always like to pop for a real star or two as opposed to a stack of smaller, or at least lesser bits.

I plead guilty to all the above bad behaviors on occasion...

I got a fourth lot this morning. £20 over the high estimate but quite a lot under what I was willing to pay.

So, of my four lots, I only had to pay over the odds on one of them - an 1870 sixpence - which was my top target and I expected to have to pay more for it. All in all, a very satisfactory auction.

Jaggy, do you take into account the import duty when bidding? i've bought a couple of coins recently from the USA and both were sent in letter form, one was $800 and none of them sat in customs because of this, so it seems they can Open large packets/boxes etc but nothing that looks like normal Mail which has probably saved me 50 euros in tax

Azda .. the USA does not charge import duty on numismatic imports. So I just have to worry about shipping and insurance costs which, spread over the four lots, are not too much.
