Jerry He seems to have pulled this from sale. I did send him a polite note, and although he hasn’t replied, maybe he saw sense. Or maybe the vendor himself was victim of a con, in which case some sympathy is due. Or maybe he had an off eBay offer he couldn’t refuse......in which case no sympathy would be due to the purchaser. Probably the former. Jerry Quote

Jerry I sent him a message as well and he responded asking why I thought it was a repro. Then a short time afterwards he pulled it, presumably because you and others had also given him the bad news. TomGoodheart Posted July 23, 2018 Posted July 23, 2018 7 minutes ago, Guest declan05 said: Hi. Can I ask you why this coin is fake please? Less a fake. More a copy. It's a modern replica of a Victorian coin. Comparisons with a genuine Victoria penny show numerous subtle differences that, with experience, are easy to spot. Quote
terrysoldpennies Posted July 23, 2018 Posted July 23, 2018 As Tom says experience is what counts, you need to look at lots of known genuine examples, and compare them side by side , In this case the 1882 without the little H below the date, is extremely rare . There are a thousand and one differences in this case , but maybe in the future it may become a lot harder to tell the difference. ??? Genuine coin on the left . Quote
Paddy Posted July 23, 2018 Posted July 23, 2018 The example @terrysoldpennies has given shows to me the most normal indication of the crude fakes around - they have an almost cartoon-like quality with all the lines in the depiction too thick and uniform, as if they have been drawn with a thick pen rather than an artist's brush. This may be as a result of using a computer to generate the image? The genuine coin in his example shows much finer artistic detail. Sadly, as he suggests, we cannot rely on the forgers continuing to get it so wrong... Quote
Sword Posted July 23, 2018 Posted July 23, 2018 The thick and uniform lines on the repro do indeed stick out like a sore thumb. The Britannia has put on quite a few pounds too ... Quote
Peckris Posted July 23, 2018 Posted July 23, 2018 The real giveaway (apart from the ridiculously oversized teeth and cartoonish appearance already noted) is that the portrait is the young pre-1874 one (possibly even from 1860-61 for those in the know?) which is quite impossible for an 1882. I'd suggest this isn't a forgery, more a replica not intended to fool the genuine collector. Quote
Guest declan05 Posted July 24, 2018 Posted July 24, 2018 Hi again. Thank you all for the information. Very interesting stuff indeed. The 1860 penny I was enquiring about seems to not be there. Was it ok after all? Quote
1949threepence Posted July 24, 2018 Posted July 24, 2018 I do wonder, as far as the penny is concerned, whether the myriad complexities, subtle nuances, shading and wear types that we who are familiar with the genuine article know so well, will be just too much for the fakers. As a result they will never get one over on the experts. Quote

Yeah, it's a Freeman 71, 7 + G. The lighthouse is wrong, and the helmet plume not tall enough for it to be reverse I. Maybe he's genuinely made a mistake due to the amount of wear. Possibly it was touted as reverse I when he bought it. Be interesting to see how many fall for it. Quote

1949threepence Posted July 24, 2018 Posted July 24, 2018 (edited) I've just had a very interesting on line chat with a member of e bay's staff regarding fakes listed as souvenirs etc, and copied and pasted the transcript into a post on the Modern Replica coins thread. Paddy Posted July 27, 2018 Posted July 27, 2018 I had to have a laugh at this one! I know many dealers who love to use "Near" and "About" to justify Fine, Very Fine and even Extra Fine grades, but I have never seen anyone use "Near Fair/Poor+" before! https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rare-1672-Charles-II-Silver-925-Shilling-Near-Fair-Poor/292656589612?hash=item4423b12b2c:g:mogAAOSweqxbWiKQ 1 Quote
jelida Posted July 27, 2018 Posted July 27, 2018 (edited) Perhaps this is an example of a security mark showing on a worn coin, and worth every penny? Or it might just be a fingerprint. What a pratt. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/One-Penny-1862-Key-Date-Rare-unusual-fingerprint/123276200683?hash=item1cb3d58aeb:g:Ur4AAOSwDu5bW2p4 Jerry Edited July 27, 2018 by jelida 1 Quote

I am sure many who are not so skilled as you or have the experience you and other forum members have might be surprised to find marks on coins that look like (or are) fingerprints. Why would your average person on finding an old coin 160 years + be aware that coins may or may not get marked by many things including fingerprints. When I first started collecting I found it a little surprising the average person would assume a fingerprint is rubbed off after such a time. Did this information come to you by osmosis ? I see the only worst offering of this example is that the Pratt ....... felt that such a strange thing might be a rare thing and hence price it as such. Please tell me also which references refer to the "finger print" phenomena , is it a widely written about occurrence or do we all just accept that is what it must be because it is the simplest explanation .....! We all have fingers and we all produce visible fingerprints on a variety of surfaces and there is no excuse (assuming other senses are functional) for not being able to recognise the highly distinctive pattern as such, whatever the surface. To then attach a £3000 price tag is quite clearly not a logical step whether one is a coin expert or not, and like the fantastically overpriced common decimals on EBay is most likely a cynical attempt to fleece an idiot. Please don’t tell me Larry that you think there is a hidden purpose in fingerprinted coins too! Jerry Quote
1949threepence Posted July 27, 2018 Posted July 27, 2018 (edited) Fingerprints are, of course, common on lustred coins. I've got a couple myself and have often mused that whoever put the fingerprint there, will now be long dead. Or was it somebody in more recent times just handling the coin carelessly? Interesting article on coin fingerprinting Edited July 27, 2018 by 1949threepence 1 Quote
