The second part of this auction sale was advertised on the Geoffrey Cope Collection website (still is) as taking place in October 2024. They are leaving things a bit late if they intend to squeeze it in this month. Has anyone heard anything about it?

I hadn't realised that he was the same Geoff Cope that played cricket for Yorkshire & England !

I've just read the name properly and realised that it's not the strongman, Geoff Capes, who passed last week.

Thought they were getting shot of his coins rather quickly.

Nice

Struggling to whittle down my “ must have, or will throw toys out of pram ” list.

Might have to dig deep, I fear that there will be stiff competition on many of the lots. 🙀

I thought that for part 1, until the prices for the ones I wanted went ballistic.

The first one most definitely had outrageous competition. NAC often does, in general, for their auctions, I've been told, although Cope is the only one I've bid in.

I noticed the VERY nice Cope I 1849 Penny will be up for bid at Heritage soon. That is a wonderful coin....I have an MS63 from Glens in the old days that is not quite as nice....

I think Atlas picked up a number of his coins in the last auction and haven't been able to move them on at the mark up they were trying to get. Back to auction they go.

Atlas has beaten me out in numerous auctions, here in the US, as well as elsewhere, and promptly listed on their site at double their cost. I detest having them as competition, and not much interested in buying from them knowing how they mark up.

I also noticed several Cope auction 1 pieces appeared recently at Auction World. Probably some Japanese reseller couldn't flip all they took on.

I completely agree with you and feel they have done much to destroy the collector market and turn lovely Brit coins into “flippables” in the worst USA style.
And lest there be protests I will stand on that assessment; I have seen vigorous defense of such marketing strategy - if you want to put it politely.

Pointedly if and when the day comes will steer my collection away from such.

The Coin Discord server pretty much unanimously do not like them or their model. They're almost a gag at this point. Too many on there have likewise experienced Atlas throwing on bids till they win, only to find later Atlas just list at double their cost on eBay and their website. It's one thing to lose to other collectors, but they're just flippers with obscene markups, and accumulate so many gorgeous and rare pieces in the process. Very distasteful, and though some people may champion such a model, many of us don't.

Good point, to note to anyone handling my collection, that Atlas instructively not be involved ha.

I have noticed Atlas not infrequently resells in Auction World in Japan.  With the yen so weak I would have expected that to slow a little.

The Auction World Cope pieces a few weeks ago may have been a different flipper.

I hadn't looked at their site /eBay listings much recently.

Believe me when you SELL them you will be greatfull of any bids and if its a collector or dealer that pushes the price up a £1 ($1) is all the same regardless of who gives it you.

Richard mentioned pennies selling in the Workman sale of which i know a collector bought 7/8 and a couple of other collectors quite a lot between them both, if those three people hadnt bid then most would of gone for a lot lot less.

If Atlas did buy some or any other dealer from the Workman sale,  they had the same oportunity and the same pound notes as anyone else and what they chose to offer them for after the sale is up to them.

Buying something for £20,000 and then asking £40,000 doesnt always work out 😀.
