PWA 1967 Posted May 31, 2016 Author Posted May 31, 2016 Think its determined by what your selling ,this will determin IMO weather the costs involved are worthwhile. In some instances bigger the audiences means larger fees and doubt Spink would be negotiable I Know someone who this year bought a large penny collection outright privately and just took everything (no fees) so a number of options. Depends if you want to sell the collection in one go and how large it is , as maybe worth splitting up. Sell some privately and see whats left maybe . As a buyer Neils was definately the best option . Quote

Better than L C A for example as you know whether or not you have been outbid before the end of the auction. With other auctions, unless you are there ion the day, actually in attendance, you won't know. Far better for the on line bidder. Quote
Nordle11 Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 One thing that really p***** me off with the last LCA auction was that I put a high bid on one coin as my maximum, it was way over the higher estimate, and because it was via email and I wasn't in the room they just opened the bidding with my maximum and of course that was the hammer price. Even though it states on their website; "...this does not mean that you will pay the maximum, you will pay the next bidding step up from the under bidder." and "Bidders will supply their maximum level and London Coins will execute this instruction at the sale, lots may be obtained for less than the maximum bid." Needless to say, that wasn't how the CC auction went. Quote
Peter Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 IMO that is just wrong on the part of LCA and would really irk me.Maybe it was a slip on part of the auctioneer or was it just a cynical cover up of their low estimate? Quote
VickySilver Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 Welcome to the club, LCA soured me quite a bit in this same way several years ago and has dissuaded a lot of bidding from me. This IMO is a very poor business motto that reminds me of what they try a lot on the East Coast of the USA - burn the customer up front for as much as possible and damn the long term consequences. Not to name names but Stack's in the USA does this same type of thing... I still bid but is quite irritating pushing me to find a rep for auctions. Quote
Nordle11 Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 Lucky I didn't put an even higher bid. I only knew they opened with it because there were members from here that were in the room at the time. I would've emailed querying it, but we all know I either wouldn't have gotten a response or probably told to bugger off. Quote

At least I got a free club membership from it I suppose. Where do we meet to malign LCA? Quote

secret santa Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 Laurie Bamford told me several years ago that they were prone to doing this but yet I've won lots with less than my maximum so I'm not sure exactly how it works. It might be just possible that there were several postal bids that just happened to climax at your maximum bid and that's why they opened the bidding at that level. That would be genuine if a little coincidental. Quote
Nordle11 Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 That could be the case, although my maximum was over what it is worth, at least in my opinion. It was the only lot I wanted so was happy to pay over the odds as I've only seen perhaps one other like it. I couldn't see anyone else going as high as I went. Anyway, lesson learnt. Either attend personally, low bid, or no bid Quote
VickySilver Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 Still best to have representation. Maybe SS is a VIP and we are not quite at that level yet! LOL Quote
jon Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 My son just messaged me to say that I had a package from Colin Cooke delivered this morning. Looking forward to Saturday when I am back off holiday and I can see what they look like in hand Quote
Nonmortuus Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 I had an email earlier saying they were shipping them today for delivery tomorrow Quote
bhx7 Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 Recieved my coin this morning. Very Happy. A little more than i wanted to pay but its a good coin and already in a Quadrum so slipped straight into the collection Quote

bhx7 Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 (edited) A photo of my acquisition with my photo and the Auction photo. Think I still have lots to learn with capturing all the detail. There is loads of lustre, my image is a bit more mat but closer to the real colour. Edited June 1, 2016 by bhx7 1 Quote

Nordle11 Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 Your picture is much more representative of the coin I think. It was good to have two sets of photos during the auction. 1 Quote

The 02 I am hoping is better in hand. Clearly I had a bad day when I posted this.... I wont the 02 and 05 not the 06 Bith just arrived, both look better in hand although there is a touch of verd on the 02 Its not clear on the pictures that it is verd but in hand it is clear to see. It looks like it will just flick off when I get home though Quote
Nordle11 Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 I thought VS won both of the '05s? - On 28.5.2016 at 6:57 PM, VickySilver said: I was the "guilty"party on the '05s (yes, I liked the cleaned one also), the '07 and the '09 - sorry that was me. I thought those prices entirely reasonable. The OMS QE II I had to let go of as with premium that now approaches 600 quid and far more than I have paid in the past for similar issues; maybe that is the new price for these?? Quote
VickySilver Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 Hmm, well I first thought I had won only one but then Neil sent me a note that I had both. Guess it was only one - haven't got my coins yet. Quote
