    Has anyone started going through their collection and reconciling 5th edition and 6th edition? I just started and I am concerned. For example: 5th Edition - 1844 sixpence ESC 1690 - S; ESC 1690A - 1844 sixpence, large 44 in date - R2 6th Edition - 1844 sixpence ESC 3178 - R2 - x-ref 1690A; ESC 3177 - 1844 sixpence, large 44 with serifs - S - x-ref 1690. Am I missing something or has the 6th edition managed to get this the wrong way around?

    Received my copy today. First impressions are positive although I have not started working through on a coin by coin basis. I'm not quite sure what the purpose of the Provenances section is. If a coin is unique then fair enough. But I looked at it with regard to a couple of my 'R4' coins and I could not see how it was relevant to me.

    On this forum we just like coins. And the prettier the coin (eye appeal) and the better the condition, the more we like them. While my main area of interest is sixpences, I will also buy other coins just because I like'em. And even if a coin is not in my area of interest does not mean that I am unable to appreciate it. The only thing this forum tends to be hard on is grade. This is a pretty conservative (small c) crowd. So follow your instinct and collect whatever takes your fancy.

    While I agree in principle, it is sometimes possible to pick up individual coins at a discount to what they might be worth 'on a good day'. That might simply be because the right buyers were not at the auction or because buyers had been spending their money at a different auction. Obviously, to identify those opportunities requires a good eye, a very good knowledge of the coins in question and the generally prevailing market conditions.

    I was going to bid but when I realised that Coppers was in the market I just knew that I didn't have the financial legs to compete Will just stick to a couple of sixpences I have in my 'Cabinet'.

    Heritage also have a World Coins signature auction in September. I am bidding on two lots.

    That is my three (3) bids in to LCA and registered. Not 'overbidding/bid-to-win' on any of them so I may or may not be fortunate. In any event there are a couple of expensive 'must haves' at DNW and I have not yet seen the Spink catalogue (not available yet).

    Nice find! Prompted me to check my own 1898 sixpences. Unfortunately, they all have the larger date Edit: it looks like the ribbon above the date is slightly different too on the small date variety

    I have identified four post 1838 sixpences that interest me. But there is only one which I would be disappointed in not winning. The other three are 'nice to haves'.

    Just been browsing this catalogue. There are a few things in there that are of interest to me.

    The 1931 is an AUNC. Probably worth 25-30 pounds max. The 1928 is a GVF and worth 5 pounds max.

    I have my Grandfathers's WW1 medals. All three are inscribed with his name and regimental number. The 1914-1915 Star is inscribed on the back. The other two (Victory Medal and British War Medal) are inscribed on the edge. My grandfather was not a wealthy man - he was a GPO sorter - so I doubt that he would have paid extra to have them inscribed. Also, his George VI Imperial Service Medal is also inscribed on the edge with his name.

    I looked at the DNW lots online and came to the conclusion that the London Coins auction had a lot more of interest to me and that I would focus my buying on that auction. That said, DNW do seem to set estimates low.

    Not my experience. I have quite often been below my max in the past several years.

    Certainly seems to be my experience. In the time I have been bidding - and winning - at LCA, I have quite often come in below my max.

    I got four out of my five lots - all sixpences: 2688 - 1855 5 over 3 - UNC - £70 under my max 2691 - 1857 - longer line under six pence - UNC or near so - at my max 2694 - 1859 9 over 8 - GEF - £140 under my max 2709 - 1871 - No die No. - EF - £60 under my max. I failed to get 2698 - 1963 sixpence. I bid £650 and it went for £850. Second time I have failed on an 1863

    Rob I had a look at my catalogues and the last DNW one I have appears to be September 2014. Did they actually send out physical catalogues for December?
