It is not a subject you would race into unless you had 5 bullets in each of your Colts and several years study. I know Tom (Richard) goes for Ch1 1/- and Stewart (Coinery) love Liz 1. I'm 10 years behind both. We all have our Nr 1 subjects

The early crowns are 92.5% silver.The George v and vi are 50% silver and might make £20 each.Have a look on Ebay. It is a funny old market and you may get more for the 2 early crowns.

I hope the move is for the better I'm type 2 diabetic but the only noticeable effect is if I eat Chinese food with a load of booze I feel awful so now I alternate.

I've got my Dads stamp albums from the 40's including lots of Vickies he the started proper collecting in the 50's when he was in the Navy.All apparently worth little.I was born in the 60's and both Grandpa's and my Dad set me off on coins/fossils/amber and nick knacks. In my consevatory I have a glass topped table full of nice bits from fossils to flint bits.If I want to wind down that is where I retreat to.I also like trench art.I have many brass shell cases from The Great war.I have bought fossils and coins for my elder sister....better than perfume and now she wants a gold touch piece. When I was about 10 she bought me a 1914 1/- in GEF for Xmas...beat that for a present.

I often do searches on 1562 sixpences (3d Size) or guinea's (brass of course) enlighten the sellers who sometimes give abuse. I do take delight in telling buyers what they have been ripped off for....and their thanks.

You mudlarks You are getting some nice history back. Keep it up.Especially the tin farthings which seem to love the Thames mud. I worked on the Limehouse link in the early 90's and cofferdams were made and the amount of clay pipes and coins/artifacts was amazing.Got a few bits including Limehoue pottery.Not to mention a couple of cars in Limehouse basin with drivers attached.

I like varieties who wants fillet steak every night. I have got Mr Grooms book and maybe 95% of reference books Including a Bramah (courtesy of John ...Chingford ).I can't put the book down. We all have our favourites.Keeps me off the streets and maybe there is a book in there somewhere.I can bore Mrs Peter but my youngest has picked Dad's hobby to get a few things.She ID'd a R/E 1856 1/4d within seconds. I got both my daughters a tray of 1895-1967 pennies and some very nice examples....no open 3 but all the KN,H & ME single 1940 exurge...sad,sad Man.My best find was the 1955-59 pennies.

With Spink they do little right for variety collectors. IE 3 examples of known copper farthings which are 1840 2 prong,1842 open 2 and even small date 1858.It took a bit of time to get these(I now have loads)some bought at cat values for the common type.I now have a safe drilled into my screeded floor and had Jake the dogs teeth sharpened.If some skank ripped my coins he wouldn't know what he had. My wife's purse was recently stolen from our home but returned less £400 cash by an honest council worker and found in a bin in the village. We are down to 2 suspects. I have opened my house to the kids,fed them and let them use the study to meet up.NEVER AGAIN.

You get the same with 1895 OH farthings, bright finish but there are some really nice proof-like examples out there. I managed to get a BU example many years ago (pre internet)I must look at it tonight.

I paid 10p for my UNC but that was 30 years ago.

Maybe get a couple of books first. I've only chanced on 2 coins in the last 7 days (under the radar)Mrs Peter deep down likes them...I'm sure

I have post 1672 copper as my first love but that hasn't stopped me hoarding 500+ hammered and Roman.I also have type sets of every type. I've got gold,foreign. (I do like pre rev French)I've got bank notes.My collecting is wide.It has happened over a long time.Step carefully and buy the best.I cannot tell you what to collect but you do need to get a focus otherwise you will end up like me with a nagging wife and an empty bank account.

Mmm .. not sure how useful TC's site is for the price of a coin that comes up so rarely. That said, if I wanted one (which I did once) I'd be inclined to wait and see if it goes down a bit, or at least became open to offers. It looks too much alike the 1787. I know it sits nicely between the 87 Kings shilling and 1816 but it hasn't got the WOW factor...even at £20K.

I believe about a 50/50 split. In CCGB they are priced roughly the same. Both are easy.

John, Here. Regards, Clive. Interesting grading. Very conservative. This lot rated as "fine to very fine". What do you think? This has been a really interesting thread and opened my mind to TPG. I won't rule out using TPG's (we did have thoughts on a forum syndicate in slabbing a few raw coins and putting them in a Heritage auction.This would of been PCGS though due to the US market. I would happily use CGS should I collect the likes of Northumberland,Gothic Crowns,1864 die 4 florins ETC but I don't. Thanks for every one's input.

Pre 1992 is the magic date...like Stuart should I know that?
