  1. Sounds as though you need to see Krause "Collecting World Coins". Pricey, But there are those in the forum that have copies. So, any 'unknowns', post pictures of them here and someone will identify and value them for you.
  2. Hi! Perkin There are plenty of books available and it will be worth your going to the public library and requesting specific titles. Chris's "Collectors Coins" is a good start along with Spinks "Coins of England". Hope you post a few of your pictures of the coins for the mob here to squabble about! You can also load pics to the Gallery. (Click the link above) Good luck in your collecting and remember plenty of advice is always available on this site
  3. George III 1806? copper coinage, halfpenny around 29mm, penny about 34mm. You can see some poor examples at http://www.predecimal.com/forum/index.php?...ser&user=226&op Click on "Geordies Others" (I don't really collect milled - just aquire them!)
  4. I was going to post this in'Ancient', but 1154 can't really be classed as that old! The Tealby penny I have recently bought seems to show the bust as threequarter stance, half way between profile and face-on. I have searched North and Spinks for a classification, without success. Am I seeing something that is not really there? The pellet in the centre of the sceptre and the form of the ear also throws me. Comments please. Where are all the hammered collectors lately? It seems all the activity has been on milled faults/variations.
  5. Thank you for that erudite dissertation! I'm sure it will be of great help to many on the forum. I must admit to 'cleaning' coins in a variety of ways, as well as using the "siver paper wipe" on some of the more obscure coins, but I must emphasise, I am a collector of hammered silver of the Plantagenets and stycas of Northumbria.
  6. I agree! There would be more in-fighting and out-fighting to make this a non-starter. Just as well! I don't think I have any more room
  7. Godless dollars - storm & teacup come to mind. It should be remembered that not all people spending money have the slightest inerest in what's on the coinage, just what it will buy! As for The middle eastern fracas, while researching my ancestry i came across a photo of my uncle Norman. Nothing unusual in that but he was in uniform and outside a tent - in Afghanistan. Nothing changes! I forgot to add - this was in 1930!
  8. Nice examples of the possibilities, Hertfordian! Which counties with whom you think there would be a problem? I already suggested that we would have to hark back to the 'old' counties to make any sense!
  9. Did you notice his 1888 VF+ penny?
  10. [quote Can you tell me the secret,I can't get within 50 yards of my Old Womans purse before the detector goes off particularly if beer is mentioned Regards Steve

  12. I am puzzled! I've just received a sales booklet from Westminster and find listed hammered, Celtic, Roman and early milled coins for sale. The pictures all show VF and better coins. Now! Just where are all these 'hoards' (for that is what they must be from - or fake!) have come from? To be a commercial venture they must have large stocks of all the examples, but, Boudicca units - Cnut pennies etc. The mind boggles!
  13. Let me know when you decide to go back to 1190!
  14. I was thinking of metal detectorists and purchases of "uncleaned Roman" not lightly tarnished milled!
  15. OK! For those 'cruddy' coins, how about this? What's your thoughts?
  16. Blast! Now I have something else to look for in my wife's change purse>
  17. Great stuff, Chris. But how long before they get around it?
  18. Changed my mind! I have e-mailed you. Couldn't attach the file I wanted to send, using PM.
  19. I've got it but I'll only be getting another two issues as I'm not renewing either. It jut doesn't seem relevant to my interests. What did you want to know? The Coin Price Guide is for Half Crowns.
  20. I think I should bow out of this discussion as I am a hammered collector and will always dispute so called graders in that field (unless I happen to agree, of course!) It's the milled clan that can take a microscope to a coin to grade it. It just doesn't apply to Hammered.
  21. My stance is, Who examines the graders? I know of 'expert' deal;ers whos opinion I value, sometimes, and those who I think are living in cloud cuckoo land. There are none who's opinion I'd stake my life (and my money ) on
  22. Should we congratulate or commiserate?
  23. Yes! There are endless stories and puzzles - if you look!
