Good strategy Pete. I found my Rhuddlan half in amongst a bunch of cut half pennies. You occasionally hit a gem.

If I've got the orientation correct on your first one i can make out AELFG. That i presume is part of the moneyers name. Going through my books the only one i get a close match with to that is Aelfgaet at Sandwich mint. But do not take this as 100% accurate. I'd need a clearer image to positively confirm that. I am 100% sure your bottom one reads ULF ON LINCOLNE.
-
As Rob said the second ones Lincoln. The moneyer is ULF or VLF depending on how you read it. We'd need a better image to identify the other one.

You've done extremely well with your trade. Great swap.
-
Yes thats correct. Lucky you eh! If you did find them then you need to report it as it's treasure. You probably know this already.

Thanks. Duly noted. 👍

Edward the confessor. Small flan type. Spink 1175. You've misidentified the one above on the right. Its also Edward the confessor. Pacx type Spink 1171 Did you find these detecting?

Completely agree. Anything to do with coins has been completely pushed down the ranks of the forum with all this. I am sure there is other websites that cater for this sort of chat. Please draw a line under it.

No. She hasn't sold anything recently that could get her name up there. I emailed mike the link to the siege piece which he reviewed then added the seller details once he seen the evidence. If you see anything dodgy crop up under her name post it up and I'll pass on the link.

It takes a while to pick it up. You need a book really to progress with proper identification of short crosses. Over time it becomes second nature if you handle enough of them.

Double strike on Hammered coin. Edward?
Ukstu replied to DrP's topic in Confirmed unlisted Varieties.
I can see TAS ON on the reverse so safe to say it's a London mint coin. As for the obverse all I can say is that's it's a coin of Edward 1st , 2nd or 3rd. Sorry I can't be of much more help with it.- 1 reply

Just remembered. It only had a few hours to run this morning left on it. It's ended without sale i presume.

Am usually good with these but brockages are a different ball game i am afraid. I think i can make out LEM being the last letters of the moneyers name and ON CANT on the other half so it's definitely a Canterbury coin. At a guess I'd go with Willem at Canterbury which would be a Henry III coin but that is a guess. I've not seen a brockage that bad before.

Mike Vosper has added the siege piece replica seller to his hall of shame. I thought seeing as he's making a habit of selling them I'd get his details put on the rogues gallery so to speak.
-
Looks safe to me. I've bought a few maundy pieces from them in the past with no problems.

Great game. Edge of seat stuff all the way , a well deserved win. Very optimistic now looking forward.

It's most certainly a fake. I posted that one up on Sunday. He's previously sold a fake Newark siege coin also. It seems to a common theme now for some people to be selling fakes as well as geniune coins. It seems to confuse "some" people into thinking they are a safe and trustworthy seller. That coins the same as the rest with the fake toning sprayed on. They are so easy to spot with or without the toning. They are being made by Dorchesters. If you look at there example on their website you can see the same mark below the 6. http://dorchesters.com/charles-i-pontefract-siege-shilling-lozenge?filter_name=Pontefract&filter_description=true

Here maybe? http://dirtyoldbooks.com/roman/Roman-Emperors.html

Don't know what happened there lol. Was trying to reply back. I reviewed my drone footage before and it does indeed look as if it was drifting westwards towards the coast so your off the hook matey 😁

Another one of those pesky pontefract pieces. He's even sold a fake Newark for £500. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rare-Pontefract-shilling-besieged-coin-hammered-silver-metal-detecting-find-1648/352394285588

I took my drone up to Wiswell moor yesterday. You could see the smoke off the Winter hill fire on the horizon. I've got friends in Southport who said the smoke was visible there yesterday along the coastline but i suspect thats incorrect as i heard some sand dunes had been lit by a disposable BBQ in Ainsdale.

Maybe. He has a lot of transactions with Field_walker. I'll keep my eye out for it again as it may well brazenly reappear. I saw one she was selling go for over £300 if it was that one they may well be eager to recuperate their losses after realising its fake. I think the original source for them is Dorchesters.com. i presume the manufacturer sprays them with something to make them look toned or aged.
-
Try and get it looked at. I could well be wrong but either way it's still a very interesting and intriguing find regardless of age. Some FLO will identify by email so no need to send it in.

The patina is not right for a mesolithic piece. It could be a Thames pick that's been retouched as they call it. I think possibly someone else found it in the late Neo or early Bronze age and reworked it. Heres mine , you can see what I mean about tranchet flakes. The front edge and 2 side flakes where caused by one strike to the upper highlighted area. Pieces made during the mesolithic were not as well worked as yours. I would take it along to your FLO. It could be useful in proving how long the area has been occupied.
