  2. It was a really interesting evening, Chris Comber gave a talk on Elizabeth pattern shillings as I said. He bought along several coins that were handed around for all to have a look at, none were in protective sleeves or anything. He trusted us all to handle them safely. There were even some gold coins of Elizabeth, amazing.I wish I had taken some pictures, will probably never have that opportunity to hold so many rare and beautiful coins again.

  3. I've got the F3/1 which I acquired in 2004. It rings right compared to the dull clunk of the casts and is as the copies except that the sharper detail is narrower in profile as one would expect compared to a cast copy. I didn't bother putting the genuine piece up as it won't help given the profile is the same for the copies. There were quite a lot doing the rounds 10-15 years ago. It was Richard who first alerted us as he questioned whether I had sold the coin which was then on the website - which I hadn't. After that I took it down and kept it. Both this one and the Elizabeth have been mentioned on this forum previously. A mm plume shilling with C R over the oblong shield is another widely available copy. I know who has the original Edward I cl. 9b of Newcastle too, which was around at the same time. Others copies include a 1713 Anne halfcrown. Somewhere there is a thread with a few listed.

  6. 8 years ago now, so a bit late to take it up with them. Besides, I'm not one for whinging, and accept that it's my fault for not doing my homework properly. It's swings and roundabouts with coins. Some you do really well on, and others not so well.

  7. In the 1970s a guy named David Gee produced fake 1902S two and five pound coins (in gold) - I thought this might be an off-metal attempt.

  8. The OP coin does appear to be a proof, at least to me. However, I quite agree with your statement. I believe the "case for proofiness" has to be proved before being accepted In the Vicky silver series (LOL) there are many exceptional business strikes that have very prooflike appearance but IMO are not. And Peck's point about 20th C. "VIP" proofs are correct as well - I see examples of such with the 1951 and 1953 crowns and other coins from the sets of these years. Also, many TPG slabbed Wreaths in "proof" are IMO not at all, and these have been sold through at auction fairly frequently (I have posted my opinion on some of these several times on these boards as well).

  9. I know nothing whatsoever about this type of coin. BUT It's just looks wrong to me too- the colour- two tone -one wrong light coloured alloy treated in some way, with the dark bits all perfectly uniformly coloured. Nope- looks recently made -a 20 minute patina applied in a factory, rather than 250 years of hanging around in the back of a drawer....
