  2. Hi Stu, Apologies for the delay. Was travelling home for Christmas! The 7a penny I was watching was this one. Serves me right for procrastinating... next time I see one, I will buy it instantly! hope you have a great Christmas. Descartes

  3. I see it went for £595 - a nice price for a genuine one - we shall never know for sure. It looks as though more than me shied away from it.

  4. That has to be dodgy. The top listing has the same obverse die as the bottom two. Bottom pieces are both Lincoln, ending within a quarter of an hour of each other on the same day with two separate listing. The top one might have a Stamford reverse, but the same obverse die makes both wrong. These two pairings need to go on a list as do the second and third looking at the metal.

  5. Yes, that's the one; I thought it was probably yours as they don't come up very often, especially on eBay. I spent ages searching for one and eventually called Spink's Numismatic book department and amazingly they had a new copy in stock for £75. The Austin is amazing; effectively a new moneyer given that Mass didn't know what his example was, athough it's no longer unique... I was pleased to pick up the class 2, and for what I thought to be a bargain £42; I don't think anyone else spotted it as a class 2. I can't remember seeing another for ages.

  6. I use my Mass all of the time (I got mine new from Spink 3 or 4 years ago and saw a used copy go on eBay for £102 a few weeks ago) and Wren is OK for a quick mint/moneyer/class check, but otherwise it's too basic. I also use Brand's BNJ paper "The Short Cross Coins Of Rhuddlan" whenever I pick up another Rhuddlan. I'll try to pick up a copy of Short Cross Legends after Xmas - thanks for the recommendation. I didn't see the Austin, but speaking of Mass, I picked up this example of Mass 704 (Class 2 Sitivene on L) in 2013. Like Mass's example it's on a misshapen flan, but mines shows that his example was missing a distinguishing extra floating stop over the L. Not the best condition, but my only class 2 and nice to be able to add something to a Mass example.

  7. I would leave those Newark ones alone unless from a dealer or main auction house especially if coming from Bulgaria and costing £1K plus. They could even post a picture of a real one and send you a copy which even then if your not familiar with them would need to get checked out. One to swerve IMO

  8. I think the Royal Mint would have a better idea about it , if it has come out the mint like that ,it would definitely be of interest to the decimal collectors.

  9. Is the digit '1' incuse, or raised? If incuse, it is just likely to have been doctored, albeit skilfully. If it is raised, I think it becomes a very interesting piece as the die would have had to have had it engraved on it. Unless it is another of those Chinese knock-offs along the lines of the Kew or lines-over-face Olympic swimmer "replicas"...!

  10. A dodgy seller advertises it and gets a friend to put in a "shill" bid in the hope of attracting a mug into bidding against him/her.The sale ends up getting cancelled, so nothing ventured nothing gained. They're up to all the tricks.???

  11. Thoughts on these 3. I wouldn't touch them thats for sure. Cyprus and dispatch from Bulgaria mentioned in the neg feedback. No thanks. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1016-King-Cnut-Silver-Penny-Short-Cross/263401343332 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1016-King-Cnut-Silver-Penny-Quatrefoil/263401343189 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1016-King-Cnut-Silver-Penny-Short-Cross/263401343600 Different seller but similar coins. https://www.m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cnut-Short-Cross-Silver-Coin-Waldlos-Of-Lincoln-1029-35/222760643838 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cnut-Short-Cross-Silver-Penny-Waldlos-Of-Lincoln-1029-35-/222760639255 Look at the first 1 & last 2. Thoughts? Am i being paranoid or is this abnormal.

  12. I have 2 coins from the mass/sazama collection. Not great examples but worth owning for the provenance. I finally acquired a copy of Mass a few months ago. Up til then I'd managed with a copy of Wrens Short cross coinage and Gerry Slevins Short cross legends. I still use the short cross legends more than mass. If you don't already own it , it is well worth adding to your Christmas list or one to own. The guy who wrote it is okay, i sometimes email him occasionally to ask him stuff , he'll also use some of my coins as examples in his updated editions of it with permission. Did you see the new coin of Henry II that was discovered by a detectorist last year? Moneyer Austin at Oxford , not listed in Mass although he had a rough idea of its existence. I posted a link to it on here a few months back.

  17. There are various ways to measure the purchasing power but this website should give you a breakdown. £0.39 using the retail price index £0.40 using the GDP deflator £4.83 using the average earnings £6.71 using the per capita GDP £27.90 using the share of GDP Looking at various records online it seems like a penny could get you a quart of beer around then, though.
