Another very nice coin from what was obviously a quality collection

The advantage of the sniper is you stop people rebidding.I see it constantly on ebay,this coin is an example of people coming back to rebid.Just about anything of quality on ebay is won with a snipe bid

I prefer the manual logic of a snipe and the control it offers.My daughters bought me a stopwatch many years ago.

I've both put in high bids early on (in the possible hope it might put others off!) and manually at the last few seconds. I guess my fear is that a high early bid might suffer from people edging it up to see how far they can go. If I'm at home the last second snipe is my preference but sometimes it's best to bid and leave it to avoid temptation.

I remember once bidding on a coin and within an hour my bid had been pushed to £77. So I bit my nails for a week until in the last few seconds I whacked in a bid of £340 to win the coin at .. £77!

I quite agree with Argentum's points. It seems coins have different prices depending on the venue, and that on occasion bidding frenzies can "blow up" the price - either at a traditional auction or an ebay one.

I went for the 1874, F70, for an upgrade to the rather scruffy looking one I've got now. It was at £180 when I bid with 5 seconds to go ~ bid nearly £100 more (£275.75), and still missed out to the winner who bid with 2 seconds to go. Christ knows how high they bid.

Thanks Colin, I got that from the erstwhile chairman of the Reading Coin Club, and yes there was quite a difference between the 1894 1d and that florin...

I did get one of the pennies from the first tranche, an 1865 which was an absolute belter. I guess everybody cottoned on because the second lot all went for ludicrous prices - far to high for me to make any profit on re-sale. Does anybody know whose collection it was?

I was watching both of those. The 1894 money was only worth it if the obverse had matched the reverse for full blazing lustre, otherwise it was way too much IMO. As for the 1874, once I'd spotted the flaw in the planchet behind Vicky's bun and the light wear to the robes across Britannia's lap, I retired immediately. That was disfiguring ultimately, though in all other respects it was a nice penny. Just not £300 nice.

You're right about both those two, Peck. Great shame about the flaws to the 1874 - without them it would have been a smooth and very nicely toned flawless item, and probably worth £300. Ultimately, as Derek said, they were going for silly money.

Yes, picked up the F15 as it's better than my existing. Still kicking myself for not getting the F106 from 'Fiona'. It could be a long time before I find a better one. Right now I wish I'd gone into 4 figures as it was a beautiful example.
