London Mint Office

I've been offered a set of Gold Coins originally sold in limited numbers (just 499) by the London Mint Office. The set is no longer wanted by the current owner.

I recognise there is a difference between the Royal Mint and the London Mint Office but can anyone give me an idea of desirability being they're not Royal Mint.

It's the decimalisation anniversary set issued at £396 I think.

To me this reads as a 1971 and 2011 mint set covered in gold leaf in a pretty box,

value, the decimal point should be moved one to the left.

There are punters who get dragged into these rip off's.From plates to magazines & and gimmick coins.

The papers take their adverts so are not likely to bite the hand that feeds them.

Even the royal mint tried to sell 50% silver 6d's for £20.

Payday loans,cars at £99 per week,payment protection insurance.Fools and money are soon parted.

As lots of people buy coins like these because they think it’s a form of investment which one day will be more than they paid for, shouldn't there be the same some sort of standard warning/disclaimer as you get on an endowment policy ie You may not get back what you paid in sort of thing?

Well, they are Royal Mint. But you can pick up the two proof sets from ebay for probably under £50. The fact that they are gold plated doesn't make them any more valuble. In fact it could be argued (as it has here!) that they are worth less than the untouched article, in that the market for such things is mostly the amateur 'collector' as opposed to people interested in cons. Sorry. I meant coins of course.

Oh, and my thoughts? I'm not surprised the current owner doesn't want them and I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.

Think very carefully before parting with good money for this rubbish.
