goomolique Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 You pay your money and take your choice. If you don't read around your subject expect to be burnt.Thats exactly my experience.Like all of you guys say : BUY BOOKS FIRST!!! Quote
HistoricCoinage Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Cheers, Clive, saw this one, but a bit too modern 'pewtery' to even compare it to a known die!I've been really unlucky with fakes/counterfeits recently! The last few I've bought, hoping them to be cont. c'feits, have been genuine! Would you believe it? Edit: most recent example... 251393090378I did get that home-made punch Mary coin though! I guessed as much regarding its age, I emailed the seller but no response. As for the fake counterfeit, most people would be happy! Well done on the Mary, though, I look forward to seeing some of your own pictures if you get the chance. And this one is?As Rob says, it's Richard II. Very noticeable difference, especially with the portrait. Quote
azda Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Why is the Richard III so popular? His short 2 year reign? Quote
HistoricCoinage Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Why is the Richard III so popular? His short 2 year reign?Probably more so at the moment due to the discovery of his body and the media furore over his new burial place. But some of his issues are much more common than others, namely some of the Durham and York pennies compared to, say, London pennies. Quote
Peckris Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 SHAKESPEARE...& the appalling Olivier piece of overblown ham!! Quote
HistoricCoinage Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Now over £100 for the Edward/Richard III. Quote
VickySilver Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Not to mention the notorious fashion in which he "died".... Quote

Rob Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Now over £100 for the Edward/Richard III.As I said, someone is going to get badly burnt. On the plus side, if he actually had a Richard III you could get a bargain as it wouldn't correspond to any of his 'Richard IIIs' which everyone knows read Edward or Henric etc.Just a variation on the short cross pennies idea. Question: 'What's your name?' Answer. 'John, but call me Henry' Quote

Paulus Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Richard 111 is also rhyming slang. For merde? Indeed! A 'Richard' is also a 3rd class degree ... (just below a 'Desmond'!) Quote

azda Posted December 21, 2013 Posted December 21, 2013 Not so much a laugh but I saw this earlier and laughed at the comparison to the gold Coenwulf...Will you be buying the coin from Saxby Clive? Quote
Rob Posted December 21, 2013 Posted December 21, 2013 Not so much a laugh but I saw this earlier and laughed at the comparison to the gold Coenwulf...Agreed. Fairer would have been the balancing statement that he also saw a replica Coenwulf in the museum shop for £1.50. Quote
HistoricCoinage Posted December 21, 2013 Posted December 21, 2013 Whichever way you look at it, a nice coin but a dear price. Quote
