How much was that rob ?>

If you can ask that, you can't afford it :D

Plus premium, but I don't know what percentage it was. The figure of £336K all in rings a bell though - so presumably 10%.

That's a bit more like what I would have expected! What is the record price paid for a British coin, anyone know?

The Edward VIII sovereign from earlier this year? £516,000 all in.

For silver there was the reddite crown that sold at Spink earlier this year for £396,000 total.

There's my pick for the dream coin.

In terms of dream coins that aren't wholly inconceivable purchases the Oxford crowns and pounds of Charles I and then you could just close your eyes and point to anything in the Emery May Norweb collection of Anglo-Saxon coins (SCBI 16) and that'd do. B)

The Edward VIII was lot 949 in Tokyo. That made Y29m hammer.

I can't recall ever seeing an ex-mount groat?

That seems a lowly dream coin for your usual quality taste in coins?

Perhaps let's say I have eclectic taste.

Alright alright

Most of them have been gilded or mounted in the past. VF is a high enough aspiration.

Why would most of them be guilded or mounted? It's certainly not what I'm seeing.

I could understand it if it were 6ds, as these have clearly been holed and presumeably worn by later generations.

And pennies, of course, for guilding!

VF isn't a really difficult grade for an E1 groat, either! Certainly not in the context of the sort of coins Nicholas generally buys.

Now the groat has dropped. Nicholas and I are talking about Edward 1, not Elizabeth 1. When he said E1, I automatically knew what he was talking about and didn't even stop to consider E1 as they are quite common and not so desirable. You're too Tudor-centric Stuart. ;)

Yes Rob! Edward I Groat. Very rare on the auction scene. And almost never VF or better...
