I found a yh Parthing in my collection , its in nice grade too , I thought they all were spelt PARTHING ,shows what I know , I really do need roger's book

Picked up a nice L' entente cordiale medalette by lauer the other day to replace my manky old holed one .

This is a nice example with lustre

Still looking for the blackpool tower one though

Here are examples of the Blackpool Tower & Blackpool Wheel "Half Farthings" that copper123 mentions above.

Apologies for poor photos, the toning on these is very dark - almost akin to the mint darkened farthings of similar period.

Just to start this thread off again heres a little lovely that I picked up at the last York fair (Friday)

Have never seen one like this -its the smallest size and has a grained edge , hopefully someone might know a bit about it , its in lovely grade and I jumped at it for £12 , total bargain in this grade I am sure.

Yes, somewhere I have a couple of those. Very nice and probably my only toy coins. (I think the engraver - SGO - has the surname Onions??)

That’s correct - some say this is where the saying “Know your Onions” comes from, but I can’t be sure.

A (presumably) full set of these in the original mesh purse, in the original cardboard box does exist in private hands. When I remarked to the current owner that it must have been expensive, they replied “it cost an arm and three legs”.

apparently that's one theory. another says it's from an OED editor CT Onions. yet another says it began in the US.

Those are rare - nice find!

Now that you've mentioned the 1911 series, I picked this up a few months ago. Oddly, it included a few of each denomination known, except the florin, which was missing entirely. So I think you may have the rarest of a rare set!

The box has p. may as the cashier so it should be easy to go back through the old B.O.E. cashiers and  work out if its in the 1911 period

I doubt they would use a genuine name because it might confer 'official' status in the eyes of the public, consequently raising hackles at the mint/BoE leading to them having to publicly disown them as per Moore's Models

No not really been in a bit of a selling mode and been buying art it's easier to see and doesn't need a microscope. I had to get all my windows and doors replaced so sold a few rare pennies half pennies.  Hope you are well.

Frank may gave up the job in 1893 so its pretty certain that box does not belong with the 1902 set as their is 15 years difference in date , its more certain that this box had a 1887 0r 1893 set inside IMHO.

By the way I would imagine that box and set of rare coins would fetch £700 or so in that grade  (Around £20 to £25 a coin) am I guessing right ?

It certainly is not one for a collector on a budget I bet the reverend rogers would have loved it

Yes of the few George individual ones I have £20 to£40 per coin a set I don't think I've ever seen.   Take some pictures kai

By the way some of the coins mostly the gold and the  bronze penny , halfpenny and farthing are in such good grade they are really stunning they must have been bought by a really serious collector.

It must have been a wrench to sell them
