    TOY COINS

Here are examples of the Blackpool Tower & Blackpool Wheel "Half Farthings" that copper123 mentions above. Apologies for poor photos, the toning on these is very dark - almost akin to the mint darkened farthings of similar period.

A really nice set! You've done well to get that! The smaller size ones are so hard to come by.

That is seriously rare! Only 3rd known example I am aware of, after Rogers example, and my own example. It's likely that David Magnay also had at least 1 example, but I am unsure where the piece might now be, or if it could be this example, or my own.

    TOY COINS

All good here thank you, hope you are well too? The one on eBay is only the 4th example I am aware of - this one, my own one, and 2 within a (presumably) full set, in the original mesh purse, in the original box (which I can only wish I owned!). Interestingly, the 2 in the full set are different. One has a grained edge and another plain. Only ones I’m now missing are the Sovereign and Half Sovereign, which appear to be rarer than others likely because in the full set, there were only 1 and 2 examples of these respectively. The Penny however there were at least 6 of in each set, so more common. Like you, I’m amazed and pleased to see toy/model money achieving good prices! This one surprised me, and also some of the H Hyams Model Crowns seen in good condition also, fetching £200+ each recently.

    TOY COINS

Hi Larry, not me, as I already have one, and it wasn’t the person who I thought was going to win either (I won’t name them as I don’t think they are a member). No idea who got it, but congrats to them, as it’s a very rare piece.

    TOY COINS

I would say it works on the same principles, coins sliding along a built frame, used for teaching children.

    TOY COINS

Lastly, Penny (solder marks on rev.)

Florin (no double lug and corroded, but I'll take what I can get!)

    TOY COINS

Half Crown Rev (no double lug or solder marks, which is strange)

    TOY COINS

I recently obtained an almost complete set of the Education Union series - just the Shilling outstanding, where I know of only 1 example. Photos to come in following posts.

    TOY COINS

There aren’t too many that I’m aware of, but a handful - perhaps 10. A big thank you to Larry and others who have kept this thread updated regularly with fresh material.

    TOY COINS

Here is something that isn’t seen too often. This is part of a set that would have had 2 loops on the back and would’ve slid along wires (similarly to an abacus I guess). There are not many around, and even less with the loops still attached. Hoping to get my hands on some more in a few weeks, will update the thread when they come in.

That is really nice, and completely new to me too. Would it be okay for me to save this entry for use in the book please? Images credited to you of course.

    TOY COINS

And the same to you for all of your posts so far, this thread is becoming a really good read for any toy/model collector. I have plenty more unlisted bits and bobs but I don’t want to give the entire book away before it’s written

    TOY COINS

This was a surprise find in a lot picked up in auction last week - same obverse die mentioned in last post but with model half dollar reverse. Rogers 2467.

    TOY COINS

Wow, that is much nicer than my quarter farthing, I’m envious!
  22. kai1998inc

    TOY COINS

I’m not sure on the halfpenny. I don’t think the die could have been used ‘accidentally’ on the half penny, as the die was penny/quarter farthing size. I’ll have to check my books once I’m home to see if one is recorded, but from memory, I don’t think it exists.

    TOY COINS

That’s mad to think that even though the locals would know it was clearly marked, it still circulated!

    TOY COINS

I completely agree. He was very talented, and created lovely coins. It's a shame he was never involved in the regal coinage. I wonder if it was perhaps because his bi-metallic pennies and halfpennies were so popular that the mint had to make a statement saying they were not official. Perhaps it annoyed the mint enough to not consider Moore?
