Bernie Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rare-1869-Penny-Queen-Victoria-/192090131508?hash=item2cb976cc34:g:XwMAAOSwImRYjOAM The coin appears to be an exceptional strong strike but the mantle design appears wrong. Victoria hair also appears wrong. Lots of other small details not right. What do other forum members think. It would be a shame if they started faking these to such a high standard. Quote
PWA 1967 Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 (edited) Yes its snide and its out of order Edited January 29, 2017 by PWA 1967 Quote
secret santa Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 Clearly a Chinese forgery - sea doesn't overlap linear circle, numerous other errors of design. Quote
PWA 1967 Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 The coins he has sold in compleated listings are snide. Quote

Colin88 Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 Tiddly winks at it again I'm afraid..... Quote
1949threepence Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 As fake as a nine bob note. Hits you in the eye as soon as you look at it. Quote
Peter Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 I've reported the coin but unlikely Ebay will do anything about it.A sham. Quote
azda Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 (edited) I have seen another 1869 somewhere that was mentioned as being fake, so yes, they are doing these as well. Lets hope whoever is winning it isn't honourable in their intentions and leaves it a cherry. Sent him a message and he said he was made aware that it was a fake with less than 12hrs left on the clock and was unable to cancel the auction and says he will notify the winning bidder, but i think the winning bidder already knows....... Wonder where he got it....... Edited January 29, 2017 by azda Quote
Sword Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 Shot up to £398 in the last few seconds. A nine bob note has apparently been auctioned by Spink 1 Quote
Peter Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 In the past I have told buyers of their mistake...you can't do this now.Ebay even threatened to wipe my account. Let the turd know he is being watched Quote
azda Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 He said he got it from a car booty, he also said he has refunded the buyer and told him it was a fake...... Quote
georgie Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 Just stumbledon this topic, I picked up this 1869 coin from a coin and stamp fair a few weeks ago, has got me wondering now, paid £40, was described as fine but polished, I cant make up my mind if its fake or not, i know its relativly low grade, but £40, is £40. Ive recently been bitten by the coin bug again, but im seriously thinking of stopping, all these fakes and worse, a lot of sellers are not even aware there selling fakes :-( Quote

PWA 1967 Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 It is out of order georgie and sorry you spent your money on it Any real seller of coins would be well aware it was a copy. Quote

Ive recently been bitten by the coin bug again, but im seriously thinking of stopping, all these fakes and worse, a lot of sellers are not even aware there selling fakes :-( Yeah, the seller doesn't always realise themselves, but to anyone with an interest in this coinage period, the deviation from the norm is manifestly obvious. The weird looking border teeth, the ususually thick shield rim, Britannia's right arm bulked up, the thick trident arm. It's actually an awful copy. Chalk it up to experience. OK, you've lost £40, but it could have been a lot more. I notice the fake in Bernie's link has gone for £398 to some poor sap. For the rest of us it's a signal to beware as the fakers have obviously now moved into the penny scene, an area which has been relatively unscathed up to now, and predicatably the most obvious target would be the 1869. Why they would want all that wear and polish on it though, I'm not sure - @Bernie - do you think it might be a contemporary forgery? Quote
copper123 Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 where are the proper lines on the shield? Obvious fake. lighthouse and ship are all wrong too as is victorias hair - should not fool anyone really Quote

If its just pre.decimal pennies ,Secret Santa's site on this forum is a very good option. Terry s Quote
copper123 Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 the coin does not show any signs of circulation - if it had been in fine grade and produced 150 odd years ago it would have edge knocks, scratches wear and other things fron circulation - this alone should have bells ringing that somethings wrong when it does not Quote
Colin G. Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 I think this is one of a series produced as replicas...there is an eBay seller that is always selling this style of coin, which are obvious fakes to the experienced collector, but good enough to fool someone who may be unsuspecting. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GEORGE-I-1720-Farthing-Oxford-Royal-Mint-Restrike-RARE-Antqiue-Uk-Coin-/252743582435?hash=item3ad8b102e3:g:DEQAAOSw5cNYXZ6B Quote
