If anyone has a 1974 proof set ,sell it 😃 The 50p collectors are all buying the 1974 50p Proof for daft money.
  4. He has had if for nearly two years Mike ,it needed someone to see it like the buyer who has mainly focused just on bronze and didnt know about or look for them before looking on Richards site 👍
  5. This sold the other day ,power of the forum and Richards rare penny site ?
  6. I I Think the question is Terry ,is this a bisect 8 as in the one everyone is aware of BP1898B 11 teeth ,last digit over tooth. Or is it a different font ?
  7. Looking at the 8 the bisect 1898B has both of the ends of the bottom loop forming a point.Although they may appear slightly different they are both not the same as the normal 8. The bottom picture does not form the same point and a different font ,also the 9 appears wider to the loop or die wear IMO.
  8. Thats the point i am trying to make Paddy ,you dont need a glass / book /website now if you look at the design its completely different. My eyesight is not the best but could spot one straight away ,better looking at the shield and comparing it with any other copper penny ,you dont even need to look at the OBV with the year on to spot one. Remember to check every 1847 penny you may now have the chance to buy as like most varieties ,if you dont know what to look for you will never find one 😃
  9. I would have to disagree Paddy about the only interesting feature , it has a completely different REV (mainly the shield ) than any other victorian copper penny .They were being looked for before the Medusa was ever noticed ,It was only pointed out to me by Terry when the first one sold at LCA that there appeared to be a face and showed mine to the wife. She said "its a Versace coin " "it has a Medusa on it " and thats were the name came from , although people have been looking for them for twenty years the Medusa was never noticed before Terry spotted it. The Victorian copper penny series is not that many really 1839 - 1860 ,so anything that is different in design such as the large rose mentioned will become sought after by the few collectors there are. This is a rare one which makes it even more desireable ,dont fight shy of looking for one ,as they sell for a few quid if you find one 🙂
  10. Yes ,Richard will also know the ones known to date although a few are in private collections 👍
  11. You will struggle to find any not known about to date Mike and the first one was discovered about twenty years ago , so far only 12 known. The one that sold for £500 was mine and the other a forum members. They are definately Rare and will be hard to find ,just to get some 1847 pennies to check is hard and only 1 or 2 a month listed on ebay.
  12. Its the same one as Coopers coins.
  13. The 1847 No Colon & Medusa is the same coin Peck ,so other indicators such as the shield & rose are easier to spot.
  14. Yes i was putting both on Will but to save any confusion deleated the ebay one 👍
  15. This was the Alan Stevenson coin for anyone that might be interested in one. https://www.cooperscoins.com/collections/florin/products/victoria-1847-copper-penny-extremely-rare-no-colon-pattern-gvf
  16. Yes Michael has a photo and one of the 12 known ,i gave it to a forum member when i had a better one.
  17. https://www.dnw.co.uk/auction-archive/lot-archive/lot.php?department=Coins&lot_uid=311875 Although again Copper pennies not attributed 1847 Medusa and bought a low grade one off ebay for £10.
  18. The Large rose is like most Copper varieties and often not attributed ,like this one wasnt. http://www.londoncoins.co.uk/?page=Pastresults&auc=160&searchlot=2981&searchtype=2 Pete.
  19. Thanks Ian as i mentioned i wasnt sure if i had ever looked or not and no doubt you have pointed it out to me previously ,i knew from memory i had seen some with the thicker rim around ten past 👍
  20. Thing with the copper pennies Cliff is that both dies were often swapped .So although the REV die may be the same on two different coins the OBV has been changed ,this happens frequently with overdates ,repairs etc. So although i cant remember looking the REV may be the same for both date types and the 5 die crack being on the OBV just the small date. The same theory with the 1848 that is mentioned different dies for both the OBV & REV that were swapped around.
  21. Not sure about that Cliff as the detail is incuse on the die so i dont think a die clash would of caused it .
  22. Its wear to the REV die and not the coin i think ,the die was recut to form the rose so probably an old die.
  23. I have seen a copper penny similar and was told by a dealer. The coin was put between two pieces of leather and over long periods of time slowly put under pressure and pressed. The term is known as rolled and why the coin is the same weight and thinner. So just done post mint in this particular instance ....I think.
  24. These Kew gardens have gone up quite a lot more over the last couple of weeks and circulated selling for £160 - £190 . The 2009 set with the shield in aswell now selling for £280 + , there are thousands of 50p collectors with one facebook group the other week registering over a 1000 people in a week. The £2 Gibraltar hercules series have all been selling out within a couple of minutes of being released ,with thousands not able to get them causing a secondary market. I am sure most new collectors are more interested in decimals rather than the pre decimal coins we all collect on here .
