    I'm glad you didn't pay too much for that 1934, when the seller first got it back from CGS it went up on eBay with an £800 buy it now price! Ludicrous. 1934 is probably my favourite year in the penny denomination, this side of 1900. It's extremely underrated and one of the few years I would buy duplicates of even though I already have a few examples. Here are the 2 of my best;

    I've had 4 or 5 emails/messages from different people with the 403 error, I suppose it was an issue with the host as it seems everyone was having the same problem. As far as I can tell it should be OK now though?

    I suppose the first used being the straight R, as Jerry pointed out the rotated R examples have a very badly repaired A, even the one in the picture I posted it is easy to see.

    Looking over 5 examples that I readily found online without much searching, 3 had a rotated R and 2 the straight R. Perhaps the straighter R is less common?

    I did get one of these in the end thanks to @hazelman I was wondering if the new rio olympics 50p will be circulating or is it only going to be available for a fiver from the Royal Mint or of course for a tenner on ebay (!)

    The same situation applies with the 1860 N over sidesways N (or Z). The first is the normal variety, the second I have just spotted with a rotated R in BRITT on the obverse .

    Good idea you have as well, I imagine it would be nice to reminisce. If you plan on handing out a few examples though, I would maybe grab some more worn pieces that you don't mind getting a few finger marks on!

    What sort of price are you looking to pay. Doing a quick search I found this for £45 from Penny Crown Coins, who is a great guy that I would highly recommend.

    Go for somewhere between 1890-1894 (if you want the young head), they'll be some of the cheapest years if you just want one example. It's true that you're being sniped Dave, but even if they didn't snipe and put a bid in with an hour to go, their bid would still have been higher than yours anyway.

    Dave, that's a snipe bid (there are websites you can go to where you enter your details and maximum bid and the program will run and make a bid in the very last seconds of the auction).

    The bids generally tend to reflect the value, what you are saying is you are getting outbid on your bid which is below the value of the coin. Some good suggestions above, perhaps look at some trusted dealer's stock?

    Best part of this forum is learning something new everyday! The '39 shouldn't give you much trouble and while the '31 and '35 are quite common I find they're both underrated and will at least pose a little bit of a challenge to find nice, problem free ones. The '31 especially as it has a low mintage in comparison to it's neighboring years.

    Yes it'll be big money, however it's definitely more of a case of finding one with lustre first which is not easy. The coins from that year were toned at the mint so you have to find one that managed to escape the toning or avoided it from being secured between 2 other coins from that year. Just taking some photos now.

    The dot flaws I've seen on this year are also all in the same place as the first example, as is my own. The specimens 1 + 2 of your photos look like the same flaw to me, with a circle encompassing it and also the same damage to the teeth above it albeit more worn on the second specimen.
