I love the way the arguement over a coin worth less than £1 to any normal coin collector suddenly becomes a deep theological discusion on the Mail forum , with seemingly no-one able to spot the coin is a worthless fake ........... and everyone argueing over if jesus existed or not

Yes I must admit the coinage of George V is totally one of the most interesting reigns ever from the early pre war well struck silver and bronze those farthings are superb in tip top grade , you suddenly find a rapid plung into poor struck and poor alloy coins culminating with the debasement in 1920. The existance of the H and KN pennies so the royal mint could concentate on medals in 1918-1919. The potrait change and later new designs which I find quite atractive . Not forgeting that lovely 1935 crown of course and the wreath crowns

Yes that is one of the french coins i was refering too that are more often counterstamped than the english coinage. I am not sure if there was a law that stated the king (or queens) coin should not be defaced back them but I am sure this never applied to foreign coin (which would mostly circulate in london bristol or hull and liverpool) I would presume. I would also presume that the populace would also find english coins that are defaced , to say the least,objectionable and at the worst unacceptable

Many Victorian coins were counter stamped as advertising pieces it is rarer to find uk coinage that is counter stamped as it was more often done on french or Spanish penny sized coins that often circulated in the uk along with our own currency . These i must admit are common finds uk stuff is rarer as is was considered bad taste to ruin coins of the uk. Halfpennies of george the third 170-1775 are often counterstamped to weed out the forgeries (most people were illiterate and totally unable to tell if coinage was real or not , so many were coutamped as a warning not to take them

Yes but the pheonix gives you 2-4-1 on this item , but does still does not give value for money. If they gave one away free to anyone requesting their list of overpriced rubbish I might have a bit of admiration for them

You sometimes get a funny look if you ask for metho so I will stick to my good old fashioned acetone, thanks. I discovered it years ago and the only coins i have had any bad results with are the darkened farthings 1897-1917

I know Italy has a reputation for art , I am sure if you look overall over the last hundred years or so Italian coins are really hard to beat , forgeting the euros of course
