Here's one of my plumes shillings (ex Rob) I also like plumes, roses, R & P, S.S.C. etc, not just for the history, but because without them the designs remain completely unchanged for several reigns! There is also the 1723-26 W.C.C. (bullion provided by the Welsh Copper Company) shillings (good luck finding / affording those in high grades!), EIC (East India Company, found on some George II gold coins), and elephant, or elephant and castle, (Charles II - William III gold and some silver, indicating that the bullion used in the manufacture of the coins came from Guinea in West Africa - which is how the Guinea 21/- coin came to be named).

The key thing is light I think ... the lighting used to illuminate the coin, the amount of light your camera's lens will process, and the light reflected from the subject (including the background) LC (and CGS - same photographers / set up)) I believe use different backgrounds for different coin metal content / tones, but the backgrounds you see in their final results may well be post production edits using whatever software they use. They are far from professional but achieve decent enough results (nowadays). For me the end result has to be photos that represent the coin in hand, which itself will vary according to the type and quantity of light available - so not an exact science! Featureless backgrounds are best, agreed. Try a Daylight LED lamp with both lamp and lens directly over an un-tilted coin (if you can achieve that set-up without the camera / lamp blocking each other) - in essence that's where my best results have come from! As you will have gathered from my many posts, I believe this is an area worth getting right! @brg5658 is far more expert than I, and I have learnt a lot from him

I thought so, to your credit you do not promote your coins for sale on here. Your pics got so much better for a while when you had some help, did your helpers (daughters?) not document how to do it?

Never seen one of those before - very interesting - but not surprising as I don't collect Scottish coins! 146/8 - as in 146 shillings and 8 pence? What a weird denomination, I expect there must be a reason! What was the conversion rate of Scottish shillings to English?

I guess if they did away with the fee, albeit it is effectively a pre-payment, then those that had paid it would be justified in expecting a refund of their balance, returning to the obviously preferable pay-as-you go basis. I honestly think there will be more changes to this business / pricing model, as it is clearly not viable.

There are many types of which I currently have more than 1 example, over time I decide which I prefer and sell the others ... doubtless this will also be the case with Edward VII pennies I have absolutely no regrets about being freed from the shackles of date runs or variety collecting, not even bothered about being a completist when it comes to broad types, just continuing to enjoy collecting coins I like ... sticking to English pre-dec, Tudor to Liz II though

Good question - but this will only be my 2nd very high grade E7 penny! (the other being a standard 1902)
