F-numbers? AAAAGGGGHHHH! I love my pennies but just can't relate to raw reference, hence it took me about 20 minutes to decipher this post!Anyway, going back to the original coin under scrutiny, I was talking to an old oppo of Rob's the other day re Soho proofs and patterns and since he's something of an expert I tend to listen to what he says on the subject, which was that anything less than hen's teeth rare and nigh on perfect may prove hard to shift as there aren't that many type collectors out there. Those that there are have by and large got the common stuff in better grade than you are likely to come across on the market. Deciphering all that, I think he would say don't touch it with a bargepole. That's a fair point Derek, but if you're trying to build a new collection for yourself it doesn't help to know that all the other collectors already have wonderful examples! It might be better to deduce that, in building your collection, you should only buy the very best examples as these will be easier to shift in a very limited market.

Has Predecimal Got An Apple Problem

Good for me now. Thanks Chris! -
I do know Gary from this forum and from a few exchanges of emails. I also have one or two of his coins. You'll find several other keen bronze collectors here too. Well done for having put together a fairly complete collection. I have a long way to go, but do collect right back to 1797, which widens the scope. Like you, I tend only to collect the Freeman 'numbers' with the obvious Gouby varieties. I don't often bother with the date width variations or filled-die type errors. Both F-21 and F-41 are great finds, especially if in better than 'washer' condition. F-148 isn't so common in high grade, but UNC examples are out there. Baldwins sold one last year from their fixed price list. I tend to agree about the F-169. VR Court found 2 in 1700 coins searched, but I honestly think he was lucky. They seem rarer than that.

Has Predecimal Got An Apple Problem

I had the problem on my iPhone earlier this evening, but it was fine on my Mac. Works generally ok on the iPhone now but a few graphics are missing. -
I agree, it's a lovely example of Peck 1325. I only have the 1321, (which is without the faulty 1 & 0 in the date, though apparently slightly scarcer). Price seems too high though, around $1500 would be the max for this coin in my opinion. Anyway, that aside, welcome to the forum! There are many copper & bronze collectors here and we'd be interested to hear more about your coins.

No need to feel you've missed the boat, Peter…. I have 10,000 Accumulatorbenefit Bitcoins which I'd be happy to pass off sell you for just £1 each! Health warning: Remember that the value of any investment is far more likely to go down rather than up but don't let that put you off.

Betty Botter bought a bit of butter. But the butter Betty bought was bitter! So Betty bought another bit of butter, better than the bit of butter Betty bought before. You're wasted! No, I mean you're wasted! Ok, I will come clean, I am actually a bot - a SpamMaster 3000TM. And one of my advanced functions is to generate random tongue-twisters on web sites, based on key words - this one was triggered by Coinery's use of the word 'botter'.You can't beat a better bit of botter! The standard of post in this forum is very high. I've learned a lot here. Sure you mean 'waisted', after eating all that butter!

I've seen a few similar ads recently, especially on US eBay. Has anyone the faintest idea what this is? Here's another.

A lot of businesses still make and receive many account payments by cheque. Personally I rarely use them though. My chequebooks have the date printed on them and I note that I'm using one issued in 2011… I wonder if the books ever expire?

In my opinion, have an Access, Excel spreadsheet/database back-end or 'office' system for all your detailed records but host your pictorial collection on-line (much cheaper than you might imagine). That way, whenever you attend an auction, sale, coin club, flea-market etc. or just need to take a quick look at one of your coins on an smartphone, iPad or pc, you can! It's also great for linking photos into forum threads (right click on the coin, paste into the thread).

victorian model penny
Accumulator replied to a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
They're surprisingly common and that's among the worst examples I've ever seen! Keep looking (on UK eBay) and you'll definitely find a much better one for less than £30. As mentioned above, the rarities (which are VERY rare) are the miss-spelt 'PENNEY', the dated 1844 and the all silver examples. There are also lots of micro-varieties, for which there's a book published, should you be interested in researching further. -
I have a friend who continues to buy every Royal Mail commemerative stamp set issued, purely on the basis that he has all the others (for the last 20 years) and can't stop now! He doesn't really enjoy them, in the sense that he never even looks at them, researches them or has any further involvement with his collection. I've hinted, but haven't the heart to point out that they're virtually worthless!

I don't mind referenda on any subject but I would like that everybody who intends to vote take an exam on the subject first just to make sure they know what they're talking about. Could be some surprises there...And whilst talking about unelected bodies, can I have a vote on who becomes our next head of state? You mean you aren't looking forward to seeing Charles III coinage? Oh, he won't be a Charles - they always change their name! (At least, George VI and Edward VII did, I'm not sure about George V - but who was? ). My bet is that Charlie-boy will be Fred the First, or possibly Camillum the First. Why not Wayne or Sean or Dean? That would do it for me. or for a modern twist on a classic name: Will.I.am -
Not the Eric P Newman sale yet, but I've been watching today's Heritage auction and the prices for top grade items are crashing through estimates. Not really my area, but I watched a plain edge 1847 Gothic Crown proof, graded PR65, make $35,250 and an 1887 £5 proof, graded PR66, hit $47,000! These are big numbers. I liked the 1887 pattern penny in gold but that hit over $20,000 so my fingers kept well away from the keyboard!

I hadn't missed them Richard, but thanks! The Heritage sale prices are crazy today! -
Ebay Freak Out!
Accumulator replied to Coinery's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Very very nice indeed! I'd rate that GEF at least. You have my sincere envy. That's a steal Vicky, and a really nice coin! About 1/100th the price of the UNC example in the recent London Coins auction! -

It's said a majority of businessmen advocate staying in the EU as it's their biggest market. Rather than rely on hearsay, or ask only a subset of the population, why not give everyone the chance to decide? It's called 'one man/woman, one vote' or more succinctly, 'democracy'. An old fashioned idea, I know. -
That's an example too, Derek. I think you're right about them being reasonably common.

A Funny Story About Ebay, An 1860 Penny, And E-Books.
Accumulator replied to Garrett's topic in Beginners area
I agree, reverse D. The colon after 'G' of 'D: G:' is aligned with a border tooth, so not obverse 3 (I can't see the signature to use that as an ID). So F10. -
I'm thinking the same as you, Garrett! I'm definitely thinking cleaned, though! The tone of all his bronze coins is unnatural and too consistent, which suggests dipping. I may be wrong though.
