cant make out what on earth it is, definaly an over strike of some sorts, thought it was 5 over 3 last night but the shape on the top of the 5 sort of rins that, 5 over 5 perhaps, on the image as it was without zoom it even looks like 5 over 6 definalty not a 2 needless to say £4.95 + £1.30 postage for a aEF 1853 farthing is good regardless of what it is

yes but after that R9 post 1895 is great. and i'm one of the farthing guys sitting on a 200-300 estimate mintage piece. but really like i said, it does depend, i was holding bun pennies to that and even earlier still, its relative to the overall figures. we classify 2008 2p with old design as scarse even though its 11 million minted due to the overall scale of minting of 2p the chances of finding one are very low.

Upcoming Colin Cooke Sale?
scott replied to Coppers's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
for me getting hold of any of those dates on the cheap is good what about throwing in the 1879 narrow date as something to get. i'm acctually happy to get ANY bunhead in fine or VF, still good looking at that. but i'm currently getting VF or better 1895+ (have the 95 96 and 01, in that grade 03 in EF..) as those are good looking pennies and cheap. the crocker collection had some interesting pieces, but not really a date run, i was dissapointed by the lack of a few pennys i was after (1919KN for example) and some of the rarer date types to compare too. I guess just checking ebay with a fine tooth comb can help most people see average grade or low and ignore/presume it rubbish, i pick up all sorts on the cheap. -

yea saw that on buy it now for £1.50 amazingly with only 20 minutes left, grabbed that i knoe CCGB values that coin in FINE at £70 so thats what 100's of thousands in mintage? -
i thought R9 was rare.. isnt that like 8000-12000? in terms of rare, it depends on the minting figures for the period, the country made for etc.

i found a nice 2008 with an interesting feature, i'll put the pic up later ok here it is, coin is UNC bar the usualy knocks etc, spotted this in a similar way to the photo, shows it (except i wasn't lookind directly at it) as you can see there is a line cutting through the edge, its not very deep or wide but its not a random knock or carving, its too neat, thoughts? -

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/QV-PENNIES-TWO-DATED...id=p3286.c0.m14 thoughts on this one 1879 small date penny i'm guessing that first one is and normal 1879 penny... average worn grade (slightly better then clear date) but hold of a small date 1879 penny is difficult -

scott replied to Peckris's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
heh nice.. i did the same to my dealer with 1912 H 1918KN and H pennies.. except i didnt say and gave it him head sides up.. and i gots em for 5p each surprised he didnt flip em over... and the 1912H obverse was the best side too, he has done in the past... i found an 1861 EF farthing... he said this one will be a bit more because its in good condition.. then said will £1 be okay... lol still looking through the 5p tin he has for average grade stuff for rares... only thing of interest was a thin planchet 1975 5p lol -

there is some interest in current circulation, people are paying £2.50 for commonwealth games £2 coins already even seen bids on 1988 pounds. what strikes me as odd with some of these 20p's... is the reverse, if i recall correctly when i started picking up 2008 20ps they had a slightly differant alignment on the twenty the top 1 being the first type of TWENTY. i found the differance is noticable to the eye if you put them together, the 1st type the twenty was nearer the edge, now to me that should be the same reverse for the mules? i will draw the line at finding an R19... i have found an R9 by accident on ebay lol not that i now much about these R ratings. -
yea same with the collection i got, my great grandad saved em up in 67... sout of what? 200-250 coins majority was average grade, nothing special in there, some nice reverse 1908s (only fine those reverses)a fine grade 1900 but there was an 1860 and an 1861 and 1864 serif 4(all very worn, i might show you those.. well the 61 is unidentifiable but the 60 is maybe just about and the 64 is..well a 64).

13 types makes me wonder though, is it is as rare as we think but i think pointings should count if its 1 or 2 types in a year? but 13? As far as i'm concerned low tide = F156 with MINOR pointing differances normal is F157 1903 is F158 and open 3 is 158A (why A?) 1904 is F159 1905 is F160/1 (another pointing this is the E in penny pointing at a rim tooth or a gap 1906 is F162 1907 is F163 then we have 1908 F164-6 all pointings again but the rare one is 164A with the colon after britt pointing at a tooth 1909 F168 which is 1 in the date pointing to the right of the tooth and F169 1 above tooth which is rare 1910 F170 so.. thats what i read from CCGB whats F167? and all of these are all pointings (except low tide which is the victorian reverse) of course things get missed (see 1858 small date farthing and PECK, which is obviously a variety but was missed) but thats rare, and i would love to see the differance between all 13 of these because well.... thats a lot of differances in such a small area. it was fine in the victorians you could see date differances, but spotting the differance between 13 spacing differances in that small area? i must really get that book... -

yes i won it http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...e=STRK:MEWNX:IT listed as 1875 BUT having taken the picture and zoomed in and also after comparing to other examples, i believe to have got my hands on an 1875h penny (had to check for the size of the H and the size of the raised wear looks to be that of an H) -

nice 1902 but £20 O.O wide 2? how rare are wide 2's i always thought there were date spacing differances in 1902's... i got my F169 1909 penny through luck (bulk buy) by 1939 rhodesia 6D through luck (bulk buy) my 1858 small date farthing through luck (dealer didn't have a book with it listed) so there are ways to get one cheaply, but you do need luck -
