Books on German coins - Recommendations please
Gary replied to Nonmortuus's topic in Enquiries about Non British coins
Post unification? this is basically the standard Catalog for german Coins Schön available on Amazon. It is however in German. A more comprehensive Catalog is German coins 1601 to present from Krause which is in english Krause for an unbelievable price of 97 quid..... used....!!! or €56 used on German Amazon Krause I'm shocked at those prices!!!! I bought this Cat a few years back and the price on the cover is $59!!! -
Thanks for the input folks. Its not a detecting find. It comes from an old collection which was inherited by a friend of mine. He has nil interest in coins and asked me to check it out unfortunately I have nil experience in Ancient coins so am relying on the net I just cannot find a coin on the net where the bust corresponds! The reverse is almost right IVPPITER CVSTOS with the word CVSTOS extremely weak on the right of the figure. I feel a trip to a reputable Dealer coming on.....

Thanks for the input and the link Tom. I agree it looks too perfect but apparently its from a good source. I think I'll have it looked at by someone with knowledge of ancient coins.

here is another one. weight 4.11g and Dia. 22-23mm a nice looking coin but is it a fake? How do I find out?
-
Here is a Denari of the Nero. I am having difficulty identifying it and would like your opinions. The bust is wrong and I can find no corresponding coin on the net! Is this a fake? It is 3.32g in weight and has a Dia. of 17mm seems to be silver.

The German Ebay site states that is not permitted to sell replicas of Coins however the problem is to convince Ebay that these coins are fake? I did not notice the gkcoins watermark but even that is not enough to prove that the 1887 set is a fake as the now seller could have bought the set and is reselling! Who is gkcoins and who did they sell the set to?

Real or not? They look good..... I for one am getting worried if these are fakes!

I've got quite hooked on the Rupees. They are quite easy to come by and are not that expensive they also look good. The 1840 is only low grade but the price I paid reflected that. Is there any good Literature on Indian coins? Having looked at the pics of the coppers I think I will have to try and get hold of a few. The quarter and half Anna's look to be nice coins!

What's the matter with it? -
I have just acquired this 1840 Rupee and the only info I have is from the Krause Cat and I am a little confused! It says there are three different Mints that minted the 1840 Rupee Bombay, Calcutta and Madras. Am I right in assuming that if the truncation has only the engravers initial WW then it is from the Calcutta Mint? WWB or WWS = Madras Bombay? This one only has W.W. on the truncation. Who is in the know on Indian coins? Thanks in advance Gary

yep, all the best. -
I think what he means is that it is an 1859 Farthing not 1839! Although in that condition it does not make much difference

Penny Collectors Who Are You All
Gary replied to pies's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Currently 206 pennies in my collection 1797-1970 so you could say I too belong in the category "Penny Collector" However Halfpennies and Halfcrowns do make up another large portion of my collection. All denominations are represented but I do have a gap for a Half Sovereign and a Three shilling Token..... -
:D quite true......

Good advice given above but I think a bit too advanced. You say that you have been busy buying coins from the 60's, a good place to start, but certainly nothing to start worring about insurance, bank vaults and the likes of. First of, coins are made of metal. All metals react to the enviroment to some degree, depending on the type of metal that is used. Gold is pretty much inert but the base metals such as copper or zinc can have violent reactions to the wrong enviroment rendering them worthless. So the first rule of storage is a stable enviroment, low humidity and not too much swing in the ambient temperature. That rules out the attic I would say, unless of cause its well insulated and heated. 2x2 Flips have been mentioned above and these are good as they can be stored in purpose made albums and boxes and the coin can be viewed without touching it. There are two types of these, one is stapeled together and the other is self adhesive. Both have thier advantages and disadvantages. The stapeled sort are not 100% sealed but the coin can be removed and replaced without damaging the it. The self-adhesive type is 100% sealed but has to be cut open to remove the coin rendering it usless afterwards. Another alternative is the coin capsule, I dont think that has been mentioned above. These come in all sizes and can be obtained relatively cheaply. They can be stored in a coin cabinet or small easily portable suitcase with purpose made trays. Chris, the owner of this site does a pretty good deal on the Lindner range, one of the leading manufactures, so have a look there to get an idea. But when it boils down to it, its just a matter of personal preference taking into account that nearly all coins will suffer in a bad enviroment!
