The value of a coin really doesn't matter (or shouldn't). It is whether it is on your radar or not. OK I take an occasional splurge. Most of my purchase's are one's where I won't suffer any backlash if Mrs Peter finds out my exact expenditure. I believe if a £5k special delivery envelope turned up on the doormat I might have a problem. A 4 wheels splurge is sitting in the garage and is going to joined next year with a 2 wheel splurge. So I'm not a coin big hitter either Peck....OK I would like to be but a £12.85 farthing turned up today and I'm chuffed to bits. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/George-III-Irish-Farthing-1806-/221317037083?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT&nma=true&si=sR1Lb0wNZxTcZk7FJ8g%252BP6Cqdmw%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
I hear a boat load of Turkeys escaped from the US yesterday....apparently celebrating their escape. Their destination UK. Enjoy your Thanksgiving Gents.
Spink publications....Hmmm. The end of an era. Quite frankly it wouldn't be too difficult to update Spinks annual catalogue for the better. It would be nice to have Hammered,Milled&Decimal catalogue's (Chris already has the Decimal edition wrapped up))
Hi Dereck I would love to see a grading book go back to covering all machine/milled coins. I realise copper will be an intense task bearing in mind workman ship and corrosion issues. I'm sure Chris has mentioned doing the same with Collectors Coins GB. A lot of raw material could be available from forum members. Now varieties would be another subject.
Goddard's dip just removes crud or unwanted stains. I never immerse the coin. The use of a lightly coated cotton bud to the effected area usually suffices. Anymore required and I wouldn't own the coin in the 1st place.
A true collector Jaggy. I have bought upgrades and sold others to concentrate on current topics. I often have a few in my ruck sack at fairs to trade in.(everyones happy) I also have taken advantage of the bullion explosion to buy discs of cu.
Agreed he has gone through phases. Some I enjoy more than others. He has been at the top for 40 years and I would pay good £ to see him again. Ozzy should be fun with the oldest rockers in town.
Some nice choices here Gents. Also horses for courses for me. I'm already dusting off my Nat King Cole and Bing for Xmas. I also like Rainbow,Psychedelic Furs,Undertones and artificial boybands
Maybe the reputation isn't as high at London coins than it is at DNW. Certainly there are quite a few more coins interesting to myself at London because my main interest is copper. If they attracted more PCGS,NGC,ANACS coins to their sales maybe more investment punters would bid big nrs for slabbed hammered...and think of the slabbing errors.
With DNW online it makes great entertainment if you aren't bidding. Their estimates were low to book or unrealistic to what the market is currently doing. If you like something,it is a big world, and someone else probably will.
The BIG BUT is whether to slab or not. I would't buy my apples from Harrods when I know i can get them cheaper from a farmers market or picked from my garden. I bloody know what an apple is.
The grading debate will go on and on. I don't believe any of the posters on this forum are anti US. I prefer reasoned debate and not trying to pick holes. There are of course merits and demerits with grading. Good counterfeits are out there (even the slabs) and a guarantee is often snapped up the public. The US market is different with grading low cost modern coins. If it wasn't for London Coins and CGS the UK grading market would be dead in the water. I personally have 6 slabbed coins which were purchased that way.The other 000's are raw.
It took a big decision. Bauhaus,Joy Division,Nivarna,Pistols,Ramones were all in the running. But Bowie wins because over growing up he has always been there.
How about some Classic? Blues?
I do believe the copper coins/tokens of 1770+ were actually required to let the poor(er) have a relative level of commerce. A very interesting subject which deserves my attention..
